Who's had their rig on a Dyno?

Post by V8 Middy »

Finally had the V8 dyno tuned today. You read all these specs of new 4Bs coming out but its all kW or N.M at the engine.

The dyno rekons I max out at 115kW at 3800rpm and 370 N.M. at 2800rpm (107kW and 350 N.M. for LPG) all taken from the rear wheels.

Given the losses in the drivetrain, I'm assuming this isn't too bad given that the engine was advertised at 165kW

What has everyone else's rig dyno'd at???

the lexus 4L powered V8 patrol put down 105kw at the rear wheels, less then the first one, but this one was running auto with 32s on 3.9 diff gears unlike the first which was manual with 31s on 4.1 diff gears

drivetrain losses in a 4wd can be between 30% and 50% so I've been told, my pos hilux we worked out at 41% drivetrain loss (dual tx cases) and i got 54kw @ 3800rpm rear wheel out of my supercharged hilux which is about 90kw at flywheel up 30% on stock figures. We also managed 66kw at the rear wheels but he had to de-tune it as it was getting to hot on intake temps.

115kw is pretty good i'd say

1 kw = 1.3410 hp

1 hp = 0.7457 kw

1 ft lb = 1.3558 N m

Forgotten where I got these from

I was dissapointed when I got mine dynoed, was expecting better than 100hp at the rear, after fitting cam and higher ratio roller rockers with tuned length custon mandrel bent headers. Still goes better than it did before though.

in the manual for a LN106 with a 3L it says 61kW but i'm pretty sure thats at the flywheel. i reckon about 40kW at the wheels. pretty sad.

Here is my Bundera Dyno

Supras and Soarers with the same mods as me usually put out 300rwhp, so it goes to show how much power is chewed up by the transfer case and large cv angle.

You guys are all talking about the actual dyno figures. How does the actual tuning go though? I was thinking of getting mine done when its finished because I got the engine slightly modded. Was mainly worried about detonation.

Yeah well maybe just get a run done to see what your afr is like then go from there. Perhaps you wont need anything done.

you'll probibly need to go somewhere that can reflash your chip. had my knock sensor switched off and got some other fuel maps installed. How muchwas the ACL kit?[/quote]

Teh race series kit was from Geoff Walsh Engine Parts. Was pretty cheap. Bit under 400 I think. Thats pistons rings all bearings gaskets welch(sp?) plugs. But it was suplus stock he trying to get rid of before financial year. I rang and said I'd take a week to get the amount he ahd it up for (was 4-500 cant remember) and he said just pay him what i had at the time lol. The expensive part was all the other work and the cam. Geoffs got a website I can look up if you like.

Thanks Hybrid but I hopefully won't need a rebuild for a while, plan on using the ACL series kit when I eventually get around to needing it.

I'm not much into mine bigger than yours thype threads but the turbo 3L hilux I ran around '96 put down 85kw at the rear wheels at 2700RPM. Not sure why they didn't dyno it to 4500rpm, it made a lot more power up there.

It was running an ARB turbo kit with a .36 a/r exhaust housing and 8.5psi of boost, 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with a small lukey resonator, 4.3 diff gears and 235 85 16 mud terrains when dynoed.

Also, had a landcruiser airfilter and a few other small bits and bobs. Used to get 10litres per 100k around town, even driven pretty hard. ( I was 19  )

I never meant this to be a "mine's bigger than yours." Its more that the factory figures are taken from the flywheel (I think) and my mechanic had given me these numbers that I had no idea if they were good or not.

Hearing from a few of you guys has given me some figures to put it all in perspective... Thanks

My 5L lux (100 thousand ks) pulled 63kW at the rear wheels in third gear at 3000RPM on the detroit diesel chassis dyno - I thought that was reasonably good considering it is bone stock apart from 31s. It still feels sluggish on the road tho.....

my hilux was dyno'd at 212.9 RWHP (158kw) and 1080nm of torque at 2800rpm with a turbo 7mgte supra donk running 7psi boost, but the thing blew a headgasket two days later, and when i pulled it down i found the hole engine is in need of a rebuild. :bad-words:
