2H end float BUGGER

Post by turbo4t »

Just went to change my front main seal and noticed about 1/2mm end float on the crank. Any suggestions (apart from a bottom end rebuild)?

i heard from a guy that worked on alot of coasters with 2h's that they can lose a nut off the harmonic balancer if its ever been adjusted and not redone with locktite, have you lost yours ?

not that that will help ya fix it, could explain it.

Is it Manual or Auto? End float is not uncommon especially in Manuals. In manuals its usually caused by someone riding the clutch all the time.

Cheap fix is to drop the sump and replace the thrust bearings. This is usually all thats worn out and they can usually be replaced on most engines in the car. Im not familiar with the 2H but would be surprised if it cant be done in place. Thrust bearing is usually on the middle Main Bearing.

end float is the amount of axial play ie back-farward slop in the crankshaft.

1/2mm is a bit too much.

as Ruff has suggested you can drop the sump off and replace the centre main bearing, from memory the end float thrust bearing is integral with the centre main bearing. you need to drop all the main bearings to be able to get the top shells out, there is enough slop in the gearbox input shaft to give you clearance.

might as well freshen the big end bearings while you're in there, only another $50 in parts.

tip: pull the sump and oil pickup off one afternoon, and let the engine drip overnight (or longer) before you get under there and start wrenching. oil in your eyes really stings and oil on safety glasses = can't see a damn thing.

don't ignore it, it will cause floggage of the big end bearings which can result in a spun bearing and will cause rapid wear of the piston skirts which will lead to poor piston ring sealing -> blowby

cheers
