Hi flow cats
To all the 4x4 guru's out there, my catalytic converter has decided that enough is enough and has packed it in. I am able to get a hold of a high flow cat for roughly the same price as a regular cat. I was just wondering if they are worth it, if they provide more power instead of just more noise, and also if fuel consumption is improved. I already have fitted 2 1/2 in extractors and sports exhaust. its a 1997 Wrangler.
Any info would be great.

If it cost the same then you have nothing to lose. As Bazzle said, it wont affect the noise much. Make sure you find the cause of the cat failure as they dont fail very often. If you replace the cat & the engine is overfuelling then it will bugger the new cat & you will have wasted your money.

Any exhaust dudes reading this???
Any "high flow" cats I have seen advertised are generally twice the price of a normal cat. I was thinking, if my exhaust is 2" tube can I get the same affect as a high flow 2" cat by using a 2.5" or 3"?

I had a brand new one go on me once (after dunking it into a creek crossing). All it seemed to do is have an annoying rattle for about 15 minutes, then a louder rattle which clogged the exhaust up and killed power. Once i got it back on the road i gave it a gutfull and could feel it blowing the remains of the cat out the back (with a big puff of smoke). After that it was fine and didn't seem to do any damage to the muffler.

Have a look at the crossectional body area of the different sized cats to make sure it isn't just larger piping on each end!!

My Jackeroo is a diesel and it has one. How much a PITA is that......Can't get a high flow diesel cat off the shelf!!!!!

You can get four types of high flow cats:
1) Stock cat with bigger holes.
2) Cat with larger holes in the ceramic block. Dearest.
3) Cat with stock sized holes in the ceramic block, but the ceramic block is not as long inside the cat. Imports, probably don't comply with ADR's.
4) 2nd hander and cut the ends off!
Do not put tube up the middle, as if you are caught and they can prove you did it you will be in deep poo.
But if the guts fall out of their own accord...........
Don't forget to find the reason it failed before you fit a new one. Generally failure is caused by leaning out of fuel mixture (which melts the ceramic block) or backfiring from exhaust or inlet leaks which fracture it.
