how about a 3RZ-FE - (current hilux 2.7) This motor makes 110ish KW and 240ish nm of torque. This will be an easy fit (I have heard) and has EFI. A big advantage of this swap is that pretty much everything still has a toyota part no, and the power/torquw will not kill driveline. we have a number of these motors in 96- 'luxes at work and they are very very impressive - economical, and plenty powerful. also, should be a cakewalk to approve too.
3.8 litre commodore motors do make an OK fit, but I wouldn't ever fit one with a hilux manual ( too weak IMHO), so you would have to think about an auto conversion, and diff gears too as the V6 won't be happy at 3000rpm on the freeway. Nice power and torque though.
Most commonly, 253 V8's are fitted to Hiluxes of your age and personally, I reckon they are junk. 92kw-110kw in stock form (according to holden in 1985, so I reckon this would be without accessories) , heavy, hard to cool ( mostly due to the bulk of the motor limiting underbonnet air flow) and with no easy 5 speed conversion, most of these end up with a 3 speed auto (trimatic), therefore needing even taller diff gears.
The supra conversions are interesting. Personally, I think that the 5Mge/7Mge type of conversion is probably excellent value and might be the cheapest route to an EFI, but I would very carefully weigh up the cost vs the age of the motor compared to the 3RZFE. Also, the weight of the motor forward of the axle, room for a mechanical fan etc could be issues too adding to the complexity of the swap.
Beware of the idea of building a "monster" hilux. power output is the easy bit - holding the car together, handling and stopping that power can easily make the whole project unmanageable. I had a very fruity turbo diesel '93 hilux back in the day, and the engine was stunning - heaps and heaps of power - at least 115kw and 330nm at the crank, but the wear on the driveline ( uni's, rear diff, clutch, cooling system,) was an ongoing pain, and the handling was too spooky to exploit the power. Eventually I gave up as the cost of daily driving it as well as trying to drive hardish trips was killing me.
amongst other reasons, that's why I would advocate the 3RZ.
Just my 2c worth.
Steve.
Ps the chev "253" V6 ( I think you are getting confused with the holden 253 V8 is not one of chevs better designs - it's a 350 with two cylinders lopped off so as it has the "wrong" V angle for a V6 tends to be a bit gruff at the best of times.
Also, as was never sold in anything here in australia, it will be very hard to get an engineer to believe that it meets any sort of emmisions regs, unless you run straight gas, which In my somewhat controversial opinion is just stupid.
the late Votec 4.3 litre version of this motor is probably pretty good, but I think they are pretty dear ($4k?) and would be as much work as putting a 350 chev in for clearances, tranmission fitment etc- all that for not over 200HP (160kw)- better with a 3.8 - a much more common swap in aus.

what a load of shit.the 253 is a good cheap conversion, yes they can be hard to cool if you try using a pissy hilux radiator.and five speed conversions are not hard,i havent seen any with a trimatic.
i have seen a few chev V6 engines in hiluxes and in my opinion its quite a good conversion, they run well and have quite a bit of grunt.

ok best bang for buck is the toyota 6M-GE (3ltr inline 6 cyl twin cam efi) use the supra motor with the cressida bellhousing (and if you had a 2.4 diesel you would use their engine mounts and it just bolts together) then all you have to do is sort out the wiring for the computer and you have bucket loads of power and good fuel econemy (and sh*t loads more if you use the turbo version) so it os a fairly easy conversion and before you ask no i havent done it but i was looking at it as a conversion for my hilux surf that i just blew the motor in

here here. 6mge is the stroked 5mge. but good luck finding one, also if the main pulley on the crank wobbles engine is useless. with these engines you wont break diffs or gearboxes but the large rev range and adequate power make the lux feel more like a sedan than a truck. still loving my 5mge conversion. never looked back for the around $1500 conversion. been pulled up by police and engine looks so stock they didnt even realise it was a conversion.
However, spend money money money and get a 300+ hp engine with a champ drivetrain. that is my next project

mate this is crap, ive got a 88 lux with a 253 and still have standard box with landcruiser rear diff. easy to cool if you use a thermo fan (large) sounds unreal and has heaps of go.. sit on 100 k and only revin at 2000 rpm, run gas and petrol, i reckon this is a better conversion than puttin a supra engine in or watever it is you other blokes do...
but thats just my opinon...
go the v8 lux
cheers batesy

ours is not to ask why, but to do or die!
2JZ Twin Turbo Supra Engine ....
Depends,do u want petrol or deisel aswell..
Diesel? 1KZ from the late model Prado's, or a 13BT if u could get your hands on one.
Commo V6 is extremely popular, and your gearbox will handle the power if driven sensibly, RUFF ran a 3.9 Disco engine through a G52 in his comp hilux and didnt break anything.
Remember, u can fit any engine into any car aslong as u have the time and money!

Bang for $$$ the 5M-GE can't be beaten, I'm running the 7M-GE and love it
This would be a good way to go:
"The VVT-i 1JZ-GTE cranks out the regulation 206kW at 6200 rpm with 378Nm at an incredibly low 2400 rpm. This is a 2.5-litre engine that drives like a V8! "
