What small pickups are available in Australia?

Hi guys, I'm still researching things before I have to leave for Sydney in January. For those who don't know me, I'm moving to Sydney from Canada. I've been accepted to dental school and will be there for at least 4 years, likely for ever. I can't see myself EVER leaving. Anyway, I was thinking about buying a small pickup truck when I get down there but can't seem to locate any on your used auto sites? Because the model names are different, it's hard to find anything. Here in Canada, some popular small pickups are the Toyota's and Nissan's, aside from the gas-guzzling GM's, Ford's, and Dodges. I want the smaller one for fuel mileage but really like the idea of a pickup because I'll be able to use it for moving things, etc. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks everyone :-)

in australia we call them a 'ute' or 'utility', try searching with those names and you'll have better luck

You want to look out for:

Holden Rodeo
Nissan Navara
Toyota Hilux - very popular 4WD
Mitsubishi Triton
Suzuki Sierra LWB ute (rare)

These above are all commercial (light truck) types, all with 4wd versions.

You can also get utes:
Holden Commodore ute (there is a 4wd version, pricey!)
Ford Falcon Ute
Mazda Bravo ute etc

There are plenty more. Search for ute (as in utility vehicle) rather than pickup (I haven't seen too many vehicles that can pick something up - they carry stuff well once you pick it up and put it in there :lol:

Nissan Navara (Nissan Frontier)
Holden Rodeo (Isuzu Pickup)
Mazda Bravo/Ford Courier
Mitsubishi Triton
Ssangyong Musso
Tata Telcoline

Large size
Toyota Landcruiser
Nissan Patrol

Big arse size
Ford F-250

If you do a search on any of these names you'll get bomarded with websites with pictures and stats.

I assumed he was after a 4x4 but there are certainly some good 2x4 utes out there also.

You can get hydraulic lifter things for utes. That might make it a pickup

Have a look through the Australian based new car websites, so you can see what is what. Most are available in Canada under different names. Note that most utes in Oz are diesel (and rightfully should be). So if you are still stuck in the North American stoneage view of diesels, it would be best to straighten yerself out before shopping.

The Mazda Bravo (B2600)/Ford Courier and Ford Raider/Mazda Proceed Marvie (the wargon version of the other two) also come in 4WD flavours.

In fact most trucks in OZ are "small pick-up". The "trucks" here average a weight between 1600kg to 2500kg. Your "full size" trucks would find it hard going on a lot of our narrow tracks and fuel prices here being around $1.09 a litre for standard unleaded and $1.15 for diesel, do not make the big trucks very economical.

Diesel is that expensive?!?! Wow, didn't know. And your standard fuel prices aren't exactly cheap either. Right now we're paying in the 73-79 cents/litre range. I really like the Holden truck (?), or vehicle ;-) Sorry, but here everything that even resembles a Jeep, pickup, SUV, etc is called a truck.

I'm still not sure how the financing works there. If it's similar to Canada, I may just lease a vehicle for a few years and move on. If I decide to stay permanently, I'll buy something outright but I don't want to commit right now. A used vehicle would be ideal but it could be tough finding exactly what I want, and in the price range I want to spend. We'll see.

0.79 Canadian = .85 Australian
1.018 Canadian = 1.10 Australian

If this little theory is correct then I imagine you will be paying approximately 20c more per litre than you currently are once currency conversions are done.

The NSW / sydney trading post would give you a great choice of 4wd utes.

Don't missout the landrover defender 130"ute, turbo intercooled diesel, out pull, out accelerate AND out carry most jappers, and use less fuel doing it!

the defender only uses less fuel because you don't burn much when your broken down on the side of the road
