Overdrives and Disc conversions

Post by didwah »

Looking to add an overdrive to the original 4 speed. What are your thoughts and experiences. Contacts in Brisbane and problems accounted.

Also I'm looking to do a Disc conversion. I have read about much heart ache. What seems to be the best way to attack it?

Why not change the transmission to the later 5 speed? You will have to get a transfer out of an HJ47 if you are keeping your original rear axle in order to keep the parking brake.

Are you thinking of a front disc brake conversion? The easiest way is to get a complete disc brake front axle from a 40 series along with the brake master cylinder. The hilux disc brake conversion commonly done in the US may not be cheaper in Oz than a complete front axle change over and certainly is much labour intensive. Better to use 60 or pre-1990 75 series parts so you have vented front discs. Either conversion requires a custom relay rod.

what overdrive are you considering? the old fairey/superwinch units aren't much chop and parts are not available.

as Dave suggests you are far better off swapping in a 5 speed.

if you go with the 60 series front axle to do a disk brake conversion it may require cutting and welding the spring perches, I believe the 40 series springs are mounted slightly narrower than the 60 - so ideally if you can find a 40 series disk brake front axle then that would be the go, otherwise a 60 series axle at the very least will have all the parts you need. You will also need to swap to a disk brake master cylinder and booster.

Why try 3.7:1 diff ratio's bolt straight in 10% reduction through all the gears ie. longer 1st 2nd.
Disc brake conversion is simple bolt on for 79- frt diff's you just need to grind the end of the diff housing for anything upto 79.
I'm not stuck I'm over here!
Watch where you driven!!!
