Fitting ARB in a SWB GQ

Hi;

I need to know the difference between an ARB for a rear GQ 233B axle with drums or Discs; the issue is that I can buy one used ARB model RD17 which is for axles with rear discs but I have got rear drums; can I still use it? which is the difference?

disk brake = RD17
drum brake = RD24

not sure if they are interchangible, just listing product numbers :D

though i would think that they arent interchangible, or else why not just have a rear only and only one product number. :?

spline count and axle dia are exactly the same but dunno why they have different lockers

Answer from ARB; it will help us all

Hi Matias,

Thank you for your inquiry.

Unfortunately the RD17 wont fit the drum rear models. The RD17 has one long
pin and two short pins to retain the spider gears. The axles in the rear
disc models are shorter and will clear the longer pin that passes through
the middle of the diff.
The drum rear model however has longer axles that butt up against each
other. As a result, we designed the RD24 which has four short pins to allow
these longer axles to pass through the middle of the diff and meet in the
middle.

In short you need the RD24 to fit the rear drum brake models.

perhaps you could fit a disc rear end and master cylinder.
the housings are the same so you could fit the discs axles etc into your housing.
maybe even cut the rear axle length down with a cutting disc on your trusty grinder :?:

wouldnt you first want to check the spline length, to make sure there is enough to cut, thou, i believe there would be, but better safe than sorry,

No good cutting splines shorter on drum model as bearing preload is thru axles touching and shims on bearings,

I wonder if it works backwards. I.e. if I source a Lock-Right which is designed for use in H233B with drums, can it be fitted into H233B with discs?

i guess it would work if you bought the disc one and ran it with drums due to it being longer, but then again it might not fit....

But on the other hand, doesn't that mean that "disc" shafts do not have to contact in the middle of the diff?

Not fit - you mean the distance between bearings?
