probably a stupid question, but wtf is tyre siping, is it like what the yanks do and cut into the tread to allow the tyre to flex better?

Got it in one antt. Just don't know what tool to use if I decide to do it. A grinder? Some sort of heat gun? A Stanley knife? A proper tyre siping tool?

cool, so i'm not as dumb as i thought

would a soldering iron work? i know my old man has a little kit that had a gas powered torch (like a mini oxy), but it had a heap of attachments, and one of them was like a cutting blade, it used to cut through rubber hoses like, well like a hot knife through butter. something like that could do the trick.

I have never done it but Cjer use to race high speed off road events and he use to cut the tread.

I asked him about it and he said the easiest way to do it was to use a proper siping tool, all the other ways took ages or totally stuffed th tyres.

It will improve your off road ability but to what cost to on road handling and tyre wear i dont know.

Was going to do my new tyres, took one look at them with the groover in hand and just couldnt do it.

other thing 2 think bout is the timne involved vs. the effect u get wen done.

i mean is the amount of performance offroad that u will gain worth the time and effort in doin it ?? i dont know i am just askin...

and yeah i dunno if i could bring myself 2 hack up my tyres

I cut each swamper block in 2 when i had the , took about 1/2 hour per tyre. now run MTR'S that work fine as they are.!!!!!!!

I figure that it must have some benefit if it's so popular. Even tyre companies do it. It will probably result in more chipping of the tread but it would have benefits onroad as well as water would disperse better. I might wait until I round off the square edges of the tyres first and then do it. I expect that they will chip less if there isn't square edges for rocks to grab and remove. I'll have to think about it. Anyone know where I can get my hands on a siping tool in Brisbane?

no idea but if your tryes are chipping they must be to hard get a softer compond tyre you will love them off road to more grip

Only chipping so far is from rubbing on bodywork. I'm still waiting on supply of body lift blocks. They're BFG Muds. I thought that with the large lug surface, they would lend themselves to siping particulary well.
