4Runner Springs

4Runner Springs
Wot do stock 4runner springs flex like? I've just got my hands on a freshly reset set of 4. Have opened the spring clamps and unbolted the ubolt on the overload but not fitted them yet. They will be hung on 2" extended shackles all round and 2" dropped front mounts. Also running 99012 shocks. Tray is fairly heavy (steel with hardwood floor) but hopefully have time before the XRCC (I'm going to enter production class) to build a new tray. It is also a daily driver that can see up to 100+ km a day. Also forgot to mention that the steering setup is stock. And ubolt flip allround although that isn't really important.
But yeah - wot should I do? Take out leaves, replace leaves or just put them on and work it out for myself!
PS I realise that I possibly should have gone with other springs ie Mazdas, IFS rear, Explorers, Chevy etc but don't have the time to stuff around with mounts between now and then.

My thinking is that the 4runner springs will have a softer spring rate due to Toyota attempting to achieve a more car like ride as opposed to the stiff Hilux suspension. As far as the ubolt flip in the front - it is possible but require stuffing around. I've bought the steel to fab it but haven't had time. I may need to go to a dropped draglink to make it work though. Time will tell.

I would have thought they would flex better seeing as 4runners have a rep for developing a saggy ass. So there's one less leaf in a 4runner pack. you could have just taken one out of your lux pack Beebee. Might have been cheaper, eh? you can pull mine out and stuff around with them if you like. I wont be using them for a while. Probably will be set around the same height as the runner springs too. Exams finish wed so give us a call when your mucking about with the new springs so i can get an idea of what to do when mines up again.

I reckon that I can get the front ubolt flip to work. I've done a drawing (not quite as fancy as Bubs) but I'm sure it will work. I'm going to be guesseting it differently though. I've got the steel sitting in the garage waiting for me to start fabbin. The ball flip on the J arm that the other Dave suggested would help the problem of the joint binding but unless you do something with the shocks, they get hammered. I'll have to see if I can do something with the shock setup when I fit my hoops. The dropped draglink sold by Bigballs seems as though it would make a front ubolt flip easier though as it doesn't have as much projecting from the end of the arm to get fouled at droop. I don't want to stuff around too much as it's only a temp setup till I eventually go crossover.
Oh, and the springs have only been reset to original ride height. I've done this due to the constraints placed on Production Class at XRCC. Only a 2" suspension lift is allowed and I'll have that with my shackles and dropped hangers.
And Hybrid, it would be more trouble than it's worth to try and get those old rusty spring out of your "project vehicle" Thanks for the offer though. I'll be breaking enough of my own stuff let alone anybody elses.

I suppose that my springs won't be long enough to allow enough droop to twist the springs much. That and the stock draglink will hold be up.

when on the car you know the spring isn't going to move arouund on you
i have the big balls drop drag link on mine and it isn't much different to the stock draglink
on full compression i can't steer - wish i had cross over :(

At compression, the dropped draglink would be worse than stock in terms of binding at the joints. But the dropped draglink that I saw looked as though it would help at droop.

at drop it is alright but not great - talk to richard at 4x4 engineering he has a big balls droped draglink which came off the yellow lux which is in there - thing has never been driven - now it is going cross over

the j-arm is farked for flexy springs flipped ball, dropped drag link or both i have tried them and after breakin a few j-arms gave up and went histeer

Yeah it was to be crossover then the owner freaked once all the costs started mounting up. The crossover had been set up then Richard had to pull it off and go back to standard setup. That's where the strange ubolt flip brackets for the driver's side came about I think. As the diff housing had already had the standard ubolt plate things removed. Next thing I saw, it had this weird ubolt plate and stock steering using the big balls dropped arm. Then I was in last week and it was back to crossover again once the owner realised how much the stock setup limits travel. So the dropped arm is still available last I heard. Unfortunately, Richard want's full price for it, not that I'm saying he shouldn't, but it would be nice to pick one up cheap.
