1989 Nissan Safari TD42 with stuff
i use redline oils in a gq, i tried castrol and it had nothing on redlines...
I found very little difference in shifting going from Castrol Syntrax (a GL5 lube) to Redline MT90 (GL4) in the g/box of the missus GU, but then I might know how to change gears .
Castrol SAF-XA is a very good rear end lube, particularly with the stock LSD.
If money is no object, Redline or NEO.
Currently running Delvac 1 in the TD42T, Redline MT90 in the g/box, Castrol Syntrans in the T/case and SAF-XA in the diff. This ute does lots of heavy towing.

could be because you've already damaged the synchros etc in the gearbox, GL5 oils will degrade softer metals in gearboxes designed for Gl4 (and I won't claim to know whether the GU takes gl4 or gl5).... the extra additives and other crap will lessen the lifespan on many gearboxes.....
never put GL5 oils in gearboxes unless the manufacturer states otherwise...

most GL5 lubes are yellow metal safe these days. Most blenders have moved away from the reactive sulphur EP compounds to much more benign EP additives if they need to formulate a hypoid diff/manual trans fluid to meet a GL5 spec.
BTW, yes, Nissan specify a GL4 75w-90 in the GU, and our synchros are fine.
They will also void warranty on their Diesels if you use anything more modern than a CF rated engine oil !
The major oil companies have been trying unsuccessfully to try to get them to revise this ludicrous situation, but they wont budge. Caltex runs its entire Nissan fleet on Delo 400 (API CI-4+), which returns excellent used oil analysis, and I've compared Fuchs Titan Universal HD (API CF) to Mobil Delvac 1, Mobil's top of the line full synthetic heavy duty diesel oil (API CF, CF-4, CG-4, CH-4, CI-4+, Global DHD-1, JASO DH1[latest Jap spec]), and most wear metals dropped by half, yet Nissan would rather I use something like the Fuchs Universal or GTX 2 ??????
Japanese manufacturers seem a little behind the advances made in lubrication in the last ten years.
