I have a Patrol MK with the SD33T engine and I'm having problems with the starter motor. The problem is that when I try to start up the engine (cold) the starter doesn't engage it only turns, I have to try a couple of times to start it up. But when the engine is hot it starts whitout problems.
Please HELP!

MK Starter motor problem
Yea, same thing happened to me, i bought a second hand starter a while ago and its now starting to happen again. What it is, is the drive on the end of the starter, its got a one way clutch built into it, and it can let go and slip, almost sounds like the thing isn't engaged with the flywheel. I stripped and cleaned my first one and it didn't help.
I think from memory the drive costs about 270 and a new starter is about 450, when mine gets really bad i'll just buy a brand spanker, at least then I know it won't stuff up again - hopefully not for another 20 years anyway.....

There are no stupid questions, but there are a LOT of inquisitive idiots
God of Magnificant Ideas!
The bit you are talking about is called a "BENDIX DRIVE"
there isnt a "clutch" either ...... its actually a "one-way bearing"
its the bearing that fails and causes the problem you described.
solutions:
find a good 2nd hand starter and fit it.
pay for genuine parts and refurbish your starter.
some specialised places can replace the bearing with non genuine parts ....as for the quality
