Auto + Transfer Case problems

Post by Cory »

My overlander has a turbo350 with a dana m20 transfer case (single shift - sequential),

So to get from 2H to 4L, I have to go through 2L, N, and 4L, the problem is to change gears in the transfer I have to get the Turbo350 inbetween gears ie between park/reverse, it wont go in just in neutral which is an absolute pain!! It can take a couple of minutes to get all the way through the gears and im never sure how many ive gone through exactly.

Is this a common problem for autos with a seperate transfer case?

Any way around the problem?

thanks

is there a specific problem with your gearbox that it won't go into neutral? does the linkage need adjusting? you should also be able to shift the transfer with it in Drive as long as there is no load on the transfer/transmission, so for example you need to be on flat ground and coasting at a very slow walking pace to make sure there is no load.

thanks for your reply.
the gearbox goes into neutral, it just doesnt help change gears on the transfer at all.
Is there any better way to be able to do it other than in drive with no load? ie changing from 4H to 4L and back while on the beach/dunes id have problems finding a spot that wouldnt load up the box?

you've got me stumped mate. in theory putting it "between" park and reverse should be exactly the same as the box being in neutral, ie no drive to the output shaft, and without the park lock engaged. Yoy might have more luck posting on the Pirate 4x4 board, where there are lots of Americans so you're more likely to find people with M20 experience. Most people on here wouldn't have even heard of them let alone seen one.

cheers
