Hi fellow 4wders,
I now own a 2003 SR5 dual cab HILUX and i am wanting to set it up for some serious touring. We want to go to the cape in over a years time. Any way i was wondering what your thoughts were on tough dog suspension as i can get it realatively cheaply, Otherwise i was considering the OME gear from ARB. I also want to fit a dual battery system and i am considering the dualmate system. Has anyone fitted one and if so are they any good. I like the fact that you can join two batteries if necessary and they also have a great display console for in the cab.
Other accessories to be fitted are:-
- ARB air lockers front and rear (if the handbrake lets me!!!)
- ARB canopy
- ARB winch compatible bull bar
- OUTBACK draw system
Any options on these mods would be appreciated and if anyone knows where i can get them at a reasonable price. We will in Gosford.

have had 2 mates have shocks leak on tough dog to as they were told a bad batch then others wont stop raving about them .All depends if its touring or full offroad or a bit of both on your choice ome is good due to getting a selection of load carrying springs not sure if the others can do the same? dont reset springs due to sagging in about 6 months time from what i have seen poly air bags r good if they dont de flate or puncture or if u dont want any spring compression basically its the pay for what u get sindrome
i put 5000's all round on my 00 xcab lux not long ago and they havent gotten any softer. cant fault them for holding the road.... but geez its like getting kicked it the kidneys everytime you hit a bump.

If you're in Gosford ring about, there is also All Coast down the road from the Edge as well as another 4x4 store near Brian Hilton Toyota in Wyoming, the name escapes me. Tell them what the other guys are doing for you and see who does a better price. Don't forget though that if you're doing Cape you should probably throw a few spare shocks in the back, just in case. FWIW, I found Tough Dog'd to be good, though I had a few hassles with warranty as the fitter and 4 ways wanted to point the finger at first, though it was all resolved in the end happily with it being a fitting issue. I would consider them again for my 02 Hilux were the price right.

Thanks guys, it gives me a little bit more to think about. I am going to get a few prices today and little bit more info. I do like ARB gear but they are just so dam expensive. Also did you fit the tough dog suspension yourself Muddy or did 4ways do it for you. I was going to fit it out myself. I think i need to do a little more research. The rancho 9000 might be the way to go - being fully adjustable from in the cab. But in reality how often are you going to change the setting anyway.

correct me if im wrong but can't the tough dogs be graghted (sp?) to the rancho in cab set up? that the tough dog adjustables of course?

Thanks everyone for your info and wisdom. I have booked the lux in at the Edge to get all of the work done there as they appear to know what they are on about. Also Dave the owner has a hilux the same as mine and he has done the same as what i want to do. I am getting the following put in:-

Cheezy could probably ship one up and still be in the ballpark pricewise knowing arb.
I had my locker in the rear and it helped a little, but being a lockrite caused problems, so i moved it to the front.
The performance off road is so much better. The car pulls itself over things much much easier, and you are more likely to lift a front wheel then a rear so it helps there too.
At our last trip to Gembrook, one of the guys had arb front and rear and his front hose devloped a leak so he couldnt use it (still used rear). He kept getting stuck, the hilux was unstoppable with its front diff lock

Its just my opinion of course, just makes sense if you think about it.
I was putting the air locker in the rear as there is more weight in back of the truck. Also i figured that it would be used more going up hill therefor more weight on rear therefor better traction with air locker there. Anothere thing the front diff is nowhere near as strong as the rear and even though my hilux has done only 27000km the lsd has shit its self - well it has never really worked - toyota say that it is a common problem that the lsd does not work. A friend has a new lux and his lsd was useless from the word go.
As for the weight of ARB bars, i would rather something a little heavier and stronger than lighter and useless. I have seen (on numerous occassions) what a roo does to a lightweight bar, for that matter even a decent bar.
may be one day i will fit a front locker but i think i will put in a brawn winch before that

Cheezy winch bars look very very strong.
Not sure what the newer onces are like, but in my lux the front and rear diff's are identical, which was why i was able to swap them from rear to front.
As with going uphills........ you want something to be able to pull you over obstacles, which is where it is good in the front.
Each to their own though. A difflock is better then no difflock where ever you put it

How's the locrite go for steering, I've got my airlocker in rear and was going to swap to the front and put the Locrite in the rear, only cause I feared it might engage when I'm trying to steer, but if it goes alright I'll put it in the front, saves pullin rear out again

In 4wd it steers like a pig. I dont have powersteering so it's hard work, I would put the Airlocker in the front In 2wd it's disengaged so it doesn't matter
It isn't undriveable though
