Ideal tyre size for a touring GU

I am thinking of fitting 33" Cooper STs or poss BFG muds to a GU whose primary purpose is as a tourer.

What are peoples preferred tyre/size for this kind of use?

Is 35" too big for that?

you want a tire that you can get in remote places if you do happen to blow a sandshoe.

Depending where you will be touring, you may be better going with AT's. Soft Sandy conditions AT's are better. Hard packed regularly graded dirt roads in the center ATs would be better.

IMHO, I would look at some good quality AT's. Maybe Cooper ST-Cs

Yeah, 285/75's are a good compromise. That's just shy of a 33ich tyre.

I run BFG all terrains and have had two sets prior to this.

Never blown one (side walls exploding etc) but have suffered punctures just like everyone else. They work well.

Yeah I'm very happy with the performance of the 265/75 Cooper STs I currently run on the Defender, but was thinking of going to slightly bigger 285/75 when I get the GU.

Bogged I hear you about the A/T being better than muddies on sand and graded tracks. Muddies would be noisey too........

Good to hear you guys think the same way.....sometimes I wish I had muddies........but not that often, most of the time I think the S/T would be better.

I have 235/85 with Goodyears on seven by 16 inch rims and they are exactly the same hight as my 33" BFG muddies.

285/75/16 is probably a bit more common than 235/85/16.

A benefit of using 235/85/16 is that it'd be ok with 6" or 7" rims so in an emergency you could get 7.50R16's which are still pretty common in the bush and almost identical in size - something like 1-2mm difference in diameter.

Neither of which is really that much bigger than 265/75/16 though, so you're kind of back at square one.

285/75 need an 8" rims are just too wide for them.

My Cooper STT's 285/75/16's are 32.8" high now and are about 1/2 worn. Still pretty loud for a muddie at 110kph though, so I'd agree that for long touring they wouldnt be the best option and the ST-C sounds pretty good as an option.

7.50R16 want arnt supposed to go on 16x7 going by the research I did. As I have access to some that would make good roadies.

since the Patrol comes with 16x8's, just put 285/75R16's on. These tyres are pretty common and slightly larger. No mods would be need to fit them on a GU either.
And these tyres are a very common Patrol/Cruiser size. So availability shouldn't be to big of a problem. Also pretty much every manufacture makes this size so you can choosed pretty much all brands and patterns.

I just did a 2 week trip on bald 285/75R16s and didnt get a flat (more luck than good managment though - I think).

Websites I saw said 5.5-7.0" for the 7.5R16.

If you already have 8" rims though it's not an option.

285/75/16 is getting more common now than it used to be so dont thik you'll have too many issues

Yep just checked the BFG site.
7.50R16 = pretty sure it is 32" and can only go upto a 16x6 rim.(7.50" equals 190.5mm) Also they dont make this size.
235/85R16= 32" fit 6-7"rims. (32x9.25R16 in yank speak)
285/75R16 = 33.1" fit 7.5-9" rims. (33x11.22R16 in yank speak)
255/85R16 = 33.3" fit rims 6.5-8"rims (33x10R16 in yank speak)
305/70R16 = 33.1" fit rims 8-9.5"rims (33x12R16 in yank speak)
265/75R16 = 31.9" fit 7-8"rims (32x10.50R16 in yank speak)
37X12.5R18 = 36.8" fit 8.5-11"rims = Sweet :!: :D

hey,,

255/85/16 is more a 33" tyre

but on another note i think i might just keep my 35" for touring i thought about going to cooper st 33" but i dont know i like the 35 and with standard gearing it drives ok it's not reving its guts out on the open roads.

yet i'm undecided probably stick with the 35 for now anway

Nah dood not grown, compared em off the car, on cement, 235/85/16's are near new, 33/12.5/15's are half worn, I just brought the GQ with the 16's and wanted more hight, took the 33's of my MQ and was totally devistated...not enough difference to warrant the change...
37's are looking good now.. 8)
