Hilux rear disc conversion??
im sick of loosing rear brakes after going through a few bogs. what is involved in doing this conversion??
does anyone have a template of the brackets or some photos of the conversion.
any help would be great

I'm in the process of doing a rear brake conversion to the lux.
Using subaru front callipers (can get heaps)
Hilux solid front rotors or mabey nissan GQ
Have to make brackets but in search for an old housing
so I don't have mine off the road.(use as fitment)
Looking into running a 80's master to try and get the bias correct,
but will play around first and see how it is without master change.
Check this link out .
It's on a surf but no doubt it will give you an idea.

I'm glad you asked as I was thinking about this myself.
I can get the solid hilux discs and subaru calipers and make the brackets but what else is needed?
Longer studs?
Brake hoses?
Any change to master cylinder/Valve thingo down the back (I've forgotten what it's called)?
Take axle complete with drum brakes, remove wheel bearing and the complete drum setup, then have the outer edge of the axle flange machined down and the inner of the rotor machined out so that they go over the other with a tight fit. Put the axle wheel bearing back together without any of the drum brake setup, just need the bit that bolts up to the housing (der) . Then put axle back in housing and bolt it on complete with the new braket for the calipor, slide the rotor over the wheel studs and now bolt the calipor on to the bracket, now you only need to hook the lines up which you`ll need a flairing tool for and to hook up the handbrake line.
My rear disk setup cost me
$90 for the calipors
$140 for brand new rotors (I think they was this much, this was over 3 years ago)
$50 for the machining.
$125 for a 93 petrol GXL master cylinder.
Took all of about 2hrs to put on as I had another pair of axles that I had pre machined.

Another thing is the handbreak lever on the suby calipors needs to be taken off and turned 90 deg because the cable pulls from the front on the subis and on a lux you need it to pull across the diff. To do this you need to remove a rubber boot over the lever and carefully grind off the weld that is there untill you can slide the lever off the splines, turn it 90 and then tac weld it back on and then put the rubber boot back on. Then you will need to modify the end of the lever a bit so that you can still use the standard lux cable and pin setup for connecting the handbreak cable to the lever.
This bit takes about 45mins from memory, its very easy.

You don`t have to change the master cyl but the breaks will be rite at the bottom of the pedal and feal spongy if you don`t.
I haven`t yet but I`m also going to change the booster just to see if it makes them better again.
I had to back the rear break prop valve (on the rails under the back) off a bit as the rear would lock before the front. To do this is only a matter of bending the lever going to the diff untill you are happy with the amount of bias.
also look at the subi calipor thread as I have replied in there as well, so between the 2 threads you should be able to see what you need to do.

Guts, not sure if this has been mentioned before or not, but can we do some sort of grouping together of all the different tech sorta things and make them stickies.....so we can all sorta find them a little easier.
Im interested in doing a rear disc conversion, and having the thread as a sticky may just hurry me up in doing it, if its there to see every day
