I've spent the last few weeks trying to decide on a 33x12.5x15 tyre for my 4Runner. There's just too many to choose from, maybe you guys can persuade me.
It's a locked 94 4Runner, but that don't matter.
I do all types of wheeling. IFS or not i'm getting more and more into big rocks, then there's typical slippery tracks like loose rock, mud, and of course sand, they're to be a designated weekend tyre so on road isn't overly important.
Bloody ET's? MT/R's? Claws? BFG Muds? X-Terrain? Or even the cheap Serengettis? blah blah blah... what else?
Oh, and i don't wanna go too far over 300 a tyre if possible.
Make it easy and pick some or suggest some for me....

The age old delema.........I like the BFG muds, and are not happy with the MTRs for an allrounder.......a mate got 33" serengetti on his new hilux 6 months ago and is very happy.....has run in snow, sand, mud, rocks ets and performs well....the open lug seems to clean well in clay and crap but still float well in the sand and the compound is soft enough for rock.....wouldn't look at them for a heavyer car but good for lux etc

I would go for one that performed better on road than off or at least even on road with off - even if you wheel every weekend you would be lucky to do 10% total time offroad.
I find the MTRs really good, they are excellent in the wet on-road and in the scrub and rock we drive in here in Qld - mud is aparently a weakness but I hate mud so it doesn't really worry me.

Mate thats a good point to consider. I guess as much as we want the ultimate traction off road, we've still got to get there............

A mate has bias claws and will not go back, I tried the motorway remould same pattern as the bfg mud, work ok, good traction ran 8psi in the snow, but crap wear but ok at $115 per tyre got MTRs on the beast, crap in mud and clay, clog up and dont clean but awsome on rock, I would rather an allrounder bfg mud have worked best for me, but as you can see every a$$hole likes a different tyre so you really need to go by trial and error.......when you finally figure out what tyre is the best they will all be different

I've got MT/Rs at the moment - might be two inches narrower than you're looking at, because they're barely 10" across the shoulders.
I try to avoid mud, so can't comment there. I'm disappointed by traction in fine talc type silt - but don't really have anything to compare against. I'm very impressed with toughness - after my last big trip they've got some pretty deep cuts, but no leaks!
Why does nobody talk Coopers? Take out the silly "Sex Appeal" scores and they tied BFGs in the "big test", and from memory they had the most consistent scores across all the off-road terrain types. If you want to talk about wear, you'll have to forget the MT/Rs based on alki's experience...

I've had my x terrains for some time now and am more than pleased with them in all situations. I consistently spank a mate on mtr's in wettish conditions, he's rear locked I'm open diffed
As for real sloppy mud I think the x terrains would lose out in lateral grip but would be no worse than a mtr. That and I hate driving in mud, obstacles rawk

i got hankook muds now and absolutely hate them with a passion
hence why i've just brought some MTR's, because as an all rounder they're awesome, and im gunna be doin some serious road k's in the next 5months, upwards of a good 10,000k's easy, but no the best in the mud
my previous tyres were mongrels, absolutely loved them off road and they'd stick like to shit on a blanket on any surface, clear mud with absolute ease, and surprisingly good on the road
mate of mine has got a set of radial claws, and we got ourselves in some pretty sticky situations on sunday, and they came thru way ahead of every other tyre in the group we had, bloody good on the road as well
if i was after a off road only tyre i would definately go either the claw or the mongrel, where as id go the MTR for more of an all rounder

Thats actually what i run now in 31s. Only problem with them is the outer lugs are starting to tear up badly and chunk off on the rock work.
I did notice on Coopers website theres a newish one out called ST-C which is meant to feature a tougher tread, chip resistant. haven't heard much about it though.

They do say it'll wear faster on bitumen, due to a softer compound, but will last longer on dirt because it doesn't chip away. If it's softer it might work better on rocks...

Personally i dissagree to a point with this unless you drive up the beach at normall operating tyre pressures which of course muddies will dig, drop to 20lb and you id chalenge you to tell the difference, with 12.5's they will just float whatever the tyre.
MTRS are SHIT in mud end of story, im trying to sell(2 mnths old) to buy claws!!!!!!!!
Previosuly i had 33 mtrs $250 each and can get claws probly for $260
GO the claw!!!!
