Rear disc brakes conversion for MQ/MK

Post by FX2 »

G'day from Moscow, Russia. I am currently in the process of restoring my Nissan. I've got 160 MQ/MK LWB frame, axles 4.375 (rear with LSD - will check axles part numbers soon), 4 spd. transmissiona and x-case out of 160 SWB with L28. I bought everything from a friend, who parted out his Patrol. I restoring from ground up Patrol chassis, where I am planning to put my freshly welded and straightned Navara/Hardbody/KingCab/D21 body and it's tiny Z24i motor. Z24i mattes with Patrol's transmission.
I did some search and I was not able to find any information on rear disc brakes conversion for MQ/MK. I can source mostly any Patrol parts.
Please let me know if there is an easy way to do rear disc brakes for MQ/MK.
Thanks,
Andrey

its all custom work
there is a thread on this board somewhere about this.
one guy on here has this conversion, i think it may be patroler.....
but dont quote me.

some one on here used toyota tarago calipers ( smaller so brake master doesnt have to be changed ) and langcruiser disks from 75 series i beleive......

brakets for calipers etc have been made, but u really dont need disk rear on mq. the pull up quite well even with 38 inch tyres, as long as the breaking gear is newish......

there is a thread somewhere, maybe in the bible....

G'day! Thanks for your reply. I didn't expect that I would get an answer :)

Patroler - Can you please e-mail me your pics of rear disk conversion to my e-mail: fx2@rambler.ru

Screwy - thanks for mentioning Patroler and pointing me into the right direction. The reason I want to do rear disk brakes because all my original 160 brake gear looks like it's from Titanic - everything rusted out.

Patroler - thanks for the info. Toyota Tarago - what year I should look up? I should use it's front or rear callipers? We have this Toyota van in Russia but it's called differently - Previa (for Europe) or Estima (Japan version).
LandCruiser 75 rear disks (rotors) or front? Thanks in advance for the info. Then I'd have to do only the mounting brackets. I'd like to collect all the details and as much information as possible to ensure smooth rear disk conversion.

Also, I am using Navara's brake master - should I change to Patrol's or are they pretty much the same?

Million of thanks,
Andrey

G'day! Please see below pictures of my rear axle:

Image

I did this file to illustrate what I have to do to get rear disks.

Image

I am planning to find non-vented solid rotor (it should be thin) and mount it on the top of spindle and let front wheel studs go thru it. Do I need to install longer wheel studs?

I thought about cutting back plate that remains from original drum brakes and reinforcing it so it would hold the caliper.

Image

I see several challenges here: to find matching caliper to mount in existing holes (see width X on the picture), coordinate rotor (disk) with caliper and reinforce back plate so it would hold the caliper.

Image

What do you think? Or am I better of with a brand new custom made caliper bracket?

Patroler - I'd love to see ur rear brakes pictures.

Thanks,
Andrey

Found this thread:
disks on rear MK (how would you do it)

Sorry I don't have any plans, the work was carried out by total 4wd in epping.

I'll get ahold of that camera and post up some pics of the car, and might remove a caliper and take some more detailed pics of the brackets.

From what i can see, the bracket is just 8-10mm plate cut to sit on the axle tube on one side and then cut so that the tarago caliper can bolt to it, the plate sits on the inside of the flange on the end of the axle tube, it is welded to the axle tube, and the holes in the flange are continued through the plate bracket so the axle retaining bolts can go through (seen in the photo)

As far as qg stuff goes, thats probably a logical choice, im not familiar with it though and don't know how the proportioning would go, i guess it comes down to the piston diameter and its radius from the axle.
But like i said my rear disks are from the front of a cruiser and the tarago calipers, and it hasn't had any proportioning mods and works fine....

Mick

The cruiser disks are from the REAR of a 75 series and the calipers are 86 or 87 tarago ones, think i said they were front disks at some stage.

But there are no photos visible
