I'm not using one but have been considering getting one myself.
Yes, you can use any compressor with a tank, it's just time and fittings to plumb it up.
It will only run air tools with a tank, the bigger, the better as it's the reserve capacity that runs the tools and the compressor just tops up that tank.
As a straight compressor and judging from the cfm, you should air up a tyre in about 2 mins but with a tank much quicker as you are using the reserve capacity of the tank first.
I have not used one but as Kris said, using air tools you need the tank... tools reley on flow more than pressure, and you will not get the flow from just compressor.
I am also looking at one as I now need a new one for the new comp rig and it has to be fast.
If you do it let us know how it goes.

If the above post did not offend you in any way please PM me so I can try harder!!
I am running an ExtremeAire Severe Duty Compressor (Continuous duty cycle - 3/4 horsepower motor - 4 cfm free flow rate - 150psi max working pressure) coupled to a 40L on-board air tank ... and the performance is exceptional. Inflates x4 35" Centipedes from 8 to 30PSI in just under 4mins. Also runs a rattle gun without breaking a sweat; plus added benefit of being able to pressurise my distributor, gearbox and diffs for deep water crossings.
Secret to good performance with tyre inflation, rattle gun, etc, is to ensure an air tank of good volume, complimented by an airhose of at least 8mm true diameter (preferably bigger).
Suggestion:
Other than for initial purchase of the compressor, avoid 4WD shops and consult with pneumatic specialists when designing/kitting your system - they generally have more expertise, an enhanced range of product, and significantly more competitive prices.

These babies can draw a lot of AMPS so your battery and alternator need to be up to the task.
Tell me, are the mounting brackets on these movable, ie can you rotate them around the side so they can be mounted vertically but suspended from one side?
I have a plan in mind that would make this the most desirable way of mounting.
Also, where did you get the ExtremeAir from? Locally or imported? I am assuming you're in Aus.
thanks for all your help guys i have the snake racing tank under the hilux pretty sure it is a 13L tank so will be running the air compressor into that so hopefully run air tools .... and help pump up my 35s
my only concern is if that compressor will replace the air quick enough as use it ...
and hopefully the air tank is large enough....
cheers bogan
