Is it safe/possible to use for recovery? And how exactly could I rig it? I was thinking I'd need some sort of cradle with anchor points front and rear.... ideas?
The lack of fairlead or any way to keep the wire neatly spooled could be a bitch.
If its not too heavy you could always make a bracket to have it as a portable winch that you can attach to any side of your truck. That way you could recover from any angle. Looks easier to use than a turfer.

Sounds like a good idea - don't neet to attach it to a truck though - I find with a hand winch it is better to use it at a distance from the truck, in case the truck moves unexpectedly. Just attach a hook to the back end, so you can attach the winch to a tree protector or similar.
The handle looks very short though, there would want to be some decent gearing in that thing. Tirfors are a bugger to use with a heavy load, even with the long handle.
