ARB air locker

Post by rovernut »

I am about to purchase an arb air locker for my 98 tdi disco, I was wondering if anyone has had much experience with them bad or good?. Are the rover axles able to hold up to being locked without being upgraded I don't really do hardcore fourwheeling or anything like that so it's not going to be pushed to the limits.

The locker will be the strongest part of your driveline.
The lockers are well made and seldom fail mechanically.

You should upgrade the axles. It makes sense to go Maxi-Drive instead. Overall cost with axles is about the same and it is a better prodcut.

I believe the early disco's suffered weak axles sames early Rangie, with a 3.9V8, ARB & 34's I was snapping axles like twigs when I played hard. Around 96 was the changeover if I remember rightly.

I got my ARB locker cheap, but I did throw in a set of maxi drive axles in with it to blow away those rover ones.

The air locker can have problems with o-rings (can be cut during instal) also diff oil can blow out of the air line when the solenoid is de-energised (to unlock diff).

I would also consider Maxidrive or Jack Macnamara lockers.

Your rear axles should be ok, if not driven hard. In many situations the locker will allow you to drive more gently than without.

Regarding the air leak from the O-Ring, mine has always leaked, but has gotten worse over time. I would say that I had damaged it when I fitted it (especially with my lack of patience!!!)

Although from experience I have had no issues with the air locker bar the o-ring leak and the lovely sound of 10 spline axle breakage, I would still spend a few hundred more and get the Maxi-Drive.

Good luck with it.
