am looking at turboing my 89 model 230kms
from a not hugely mechanical background....
common feedback
good on hiway
turbo lag at low revs
DTRs are a good choice cost about 3k plus fit ($500) and 3' exhaust $600
what i want to know is what can be done to minimise lag get turbo working earlyier is suppose with minimum expense or is it just a few slight adjustments to the kit....
If im going to spend $$$ i want it to work on and offroad and not to have to sit on 3000rpm
some of this was covered in hello and turbos but not specifics, i want a little background before talking to fitters.

The smaller the turbo the faster it spins up, but the less it does over all.
Nothing cheap can really be done.. Getting a turbo Hi-flowed is one option, but depends on what you call cheap, its over a grand.. Playing with the turbo blades etc is another..
Out of the off the shelf kits available, EG Denco, DTS, Safari, AXT, according to ARB Sthn, The Denco kicked in the earliest in stock form. but once modified, they can all do gooderer...
if its 4.2 diesel u need not worry about turbo lag from any of these systems u just won't notice it like u would a petrol
if u want low end you'd compromise top end power with smaller turbine
if u want top end with bigger turbines you'll get the lag
also if u got a big intercooler and piping you'll get some sort of lag
my safari turbo kit is hiflowed + intercooler, i get a small amount of lag but its a good giggle to drive on 35z! standard gearing
for off road by ya self crawler gears they're sweet as

I am using a DTS system on my GQ, with 267,000ks on it. Installed at around 200,000ks. There is no noticable lag (I also own a rex with a FMIC and a GTiR with big mods - 168kw at all 4 wheels) and spool up starts from about 1200rpm.
Fuel economy is good (usually about 650 to a tank or 70 odd litres) and it has heaps of power for a diesel.
I got a 3" from the turbo back in mild steel and you have to make sure that it is breathing right on the intake side too, as that made mine a bit wheezy til I replaced all the filters...
Look for second hand units if new is too expensive, but be prepared to need some work on the bits you install. My mate just bought a factory turbo unit complete to bolt onto his GU 4.2 for $800...

thanks for that ....just with injecter pump wound up by a so called professional i cant even go close to that consumption, as smoke pours out the back.....

Injectors. A clean engine is a happy engine...
One other thing to remember is that a diesel engine running rich (getting too much diesel) will run hot usually, and you don't want that with a turbo.
A petrol engine running rich will run cooler. The two are opposite. Get the engine tuned by a respected mob and see what happens first, as they can usually check injectors too.

I see this as the problem.
I had mine done by 3 "REPUTABLE" mobs that happily opened my anus to extract more valuables to pay for the shit work they did.
It took me taking it to Denco in Wagga to get mine sorted out. More power, more boost, 1/2 the temps...

Lag can be offset by using a siginficantly larger fuel injection pump and essentially increase capacity of the pump by over 50%. It shouldn't effect economy, unless you start to thrash it and use all this new found power unnecessarily. The aneroid can be set to give a decent shot of fuel at "no air" to get the exhaust gases flowing and turbine spinning. As air flow increases, so too can the fuel to match. With the larger pump, you find yourself driving at a lower throttle setting....say 1/4 or 1/3 instead of 1/2 as with std pump.
Also need to give the system all the air you possibly can. The turboed TD42 needs somewhere around 350-450cfm of air flow. We've found that a standard Safari snorkel is too restrictive and needs to be around 3.5"-4" diameter. Same with normal airfilter....a Donaldson 9" diameter aircleaner is still not big enough to do the job effectively!! That is the biggest we can physically fit under the bonnet, so need to look at other options.

I tried Nulon, apparently it works, $10 a bottle, what do you have to lose while you save for injectors.
I use diesel power (think thats what its called). It comes in a 250ml round bottle and treats upto 1000lt. So at under $10 a bottle, it works out pretty well. It also treats algea and all the other normal fuel crap.
Used to work quite well for me, but my problem now is they the injectors are just getting to old (atleast 200000km, but good chance they are oler than that).

I have heard from a few mechanics that using the fuel additives and injection cleaners TOO REGULARLY can cause problems with gumming up of the fuel system.
I have heard that you should only use the injector stuff about once every 10,000ks or so, and the fuel system cleaners (algae etc) about once every 5 tanks. More and you can cause damage/problems to the system.

I would but I killed my magna today. It had a heart attack and boiled, so good chance I cracked the head. Maybe in a couple of months. But am keen to do the work myself. SO thanks for that link.
