I had a mate weld my front and another mate weld the rear....but I watched and did the dirty work. most of our club guys just remove the diff side cover, run a weld round the side gear to glue it to the cover...then insert that back into diff, if doesn't go in first try, some grinding of weld may be needed....this is enough to stop the diff action, but we also then run welds thru the inspection holes on the other side of diff for extra insurance...on a 1.0 litre diff this is done with bearing still in place, but depending on your welder, you may have to remove the carrier bearing for access on 1.3 diffs. Its important to weld and fit the side gear and cover, so the teeth can mesh, before welding other side (or meshing of teeth is too hard because no movement)
hope that helps
this method leaves a little slack, helps with steering etc, like the articles method does.
