Diesel Rangies (again)

They did come factory fitted with a VM diesel motor. I dont recall what years they came with it though.
Generally, they are a dog of a motor and should be left alone. IIRC they had a lot of issues with the heads. If you want a TD in a Rangie then try and find one with a tdi, never factory fitted but a much better motor.
But really, its not a rangie unless its got a V8 under the hood!

Those VM diesels are bloody aweful. I only know of one bloke in the RRC that has one and even that's treading on thin ice ATM.
The tdi's are okay, but also have issuees with durability from what I have heaerd, with quite a few needing work on them somewhere along the line. I may be wrong, but that's what I have heard
I'll stick with my V8 and awful fuel consumption any day

As others have said, they should be left well alone. I know of one that was pulled out for a 4BD1 swap, and when the VM was pulled apart there were pieces of piston ring embedded in the cylinder head. Amazingly though the engine still ran well, and even with 20psi boost the engine couldn't be killed completely, so at least the bottom end on the VM's must be strong.

You can expect massive Ks out of these - like 500,000K between rebuilds, the only disadvantages are they are noisy and heavy and tend to rattle things to bits. If you turbo them you can get around 500nm of torque out of them @ 1700 is rpm.
They tend to chew out r380 gearboxes in 100,000 - 150,000k

200 and 300Tdi were an option in UK with RRC.
200Tdi only came in manual, 300Tdi both manual and auto.
VM has a good bottom end, heads and cam etc leave a lot to be desired.VM is currently available in Jeep Cherokee....
I'm in the middle of 4BD1 instalation to my 1992RRC. Using ZF auto , Garrett TB25, BIG intercooler and 15 psi boost. I'll be posting results soon.
Isuzu good for 500-750,000km.
Torque astronomical @ no rpm.
Excellent fuel economy, around 25mpg driven hard.

Are you making your own manifold or using the Isuzu turbo one? Have you fitted the oil spray if it's a non turbo block?

What ZF, and what mods have you done to it, to be reliable behind the 4BD1?

I'm about to receive my manifold from Turboglide in NSW, They have ones on the shelf I understand left over from the 110 6X6 conversions for the military.
I'm using the ZF 4HP22 including low stall converter from my RRC V8, It had a High output 4.6 in front of it for about 160,000km, and showed no ill effects. It'll be getting a new forward clutch pack and a thorough going over prior to installation.
The oil jets under pistons would be a good thing, but I'm attempting to keep EGT temps to a minimum by using monstrous intercooler and setup fuelling with Pyrometer.
I hope it'll all hold together.....
