I have a 'Bamford &Smith' elec winch.
it is rated at 10,000lb. the tag on it says that it is a product of 'Basic Gear &Hoist Co' in cheltenham victoria.

has any one heard of them before?

Bamford&Smith still make winches as far as i know. The ARMY used PTO winches made by them on their Landrovers. I havent heard any bad reports about them.

I have heard that the heat treatment on their electric winch gears is not the best. Their army pto winches are highly geared and not self locking like a worm drive winch.
