Need Help - Transfer Case Problem!

Post by chug3 »

Hi Everyone - I am just need ing a little bit of help with a little problem I am having.

Just been playing around on the beach at Double Island Point and have landed in a bit of trouble with the transfer case.

I'm in a 1984 Toyota Hilux and came off the beach this arvo, went to change from 4 low into 2 high and she jumped straight into neutral. Now I can't get into anything. Have tried reverse and 1st but can't get into any gears - am just stuck in neutral.

Let me know if anyone has some ideas to help with this one.

Thanks heaps

Yay finally I can offer someone else some help on OL!!

This happened to me last weekend but I was stuck in H2 (much more useful than neutral but still stopped me going 4bying)

So you take out the centre console to get the boots off the gear shifters (knobs off). Then lift up the final boot on the transfer case shifter and squeeze the circlip and remove the shifter, then put it back in the right slot! Well thats all I had to do. It should want to go in the right place. I have been told that sometimes you may have to prise the shifter rails with a screwdriver.

Took me 10 min

Good luck!

Hey Objet!

Thanks for your advice. I pulled out the transfer lever, there was a fair bit of corrosion around the rails, I flushed out the transfer case and put in some fresh oil. Put everything back together, went for another run down the beach and would you believe that it went again!!

After a day of shifting with the screwdriver I have put it all back together again and fingers crossed she might last a bit longer this time. It looks like the transfer lever might need relpacing as it is badly corroded and worn down. Anyway at least I am on the move now and can get the boat down the beach and into the water for a fish!

Thanks again for your help!

Is the shifter worn at the bottom??

You make have to get it a dob of weld built up on it & ground back!

I sorted a similar prob ouy for a mate!

Thanks for your advice.

No worries, glad it worked. Mine is still hanging in there, though lots of corrosion too. When I first had a look in there it looked like the rubber boots had perished years ago and let in allsorts of nasties. New boots on now but one day I think a transfer case overhaul will be on the cards...
