departure angle on surf

Post by pit »

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hi,

Ive been making changes to my 94, KZN130. Ive put on a snorkel, arb winch bar (winch next when I can afford it!!), OME suspension and 31 10.5 MT tyres. Its going really well ... except the departure angle isnt great at all. My spare tyre is under the car too.

Im thinking about ripping off the rear bumper and moving the exhaust somewhere.

Im wondering what my options are?? Does anyone have any idea?? Id love to get a black steel bumper made to match the front with hooks on etc ... but Im guessing this is going to be a mission??

Has anyone changed their wheel from under to the back? Was that a mission??

any ideas would be much appreciated.

regards,

The easiest thing and first thing you should do is a body lift. A 2" lift will naturally lift the rear up 2 inches etc....
Unless you've already done it?

I just did my 4Runner on Sunday, never done one before but it only took half a day with a mate.

Try this, it should be your 4WD bible if you own a surf:

Pit,
The Surf site is where you wanna go for info, particularly for a KZN model.

Body lift is easiest way to get a better departure angle. The spare mounted underneath shouldn't affect the departure angle, but putting in a bodylift will, as the spare is attached to a chassis crossmember, and will protrude. Mine has a 2" (or so)suspension lift, and have never been hung up on the back towbar.

Aas for ripping off the bumper and making a new one, unless done right, matching the body contours, it will look pox :?

The exhaust can be tucked up right under the body, only drooping down at the end, just short of the bumper (like mine), or exiting sideways, just behind the mud flap, again, no lower than the bumper.

Another option is bigger boots, and more lift! :D

Thanks heaps for your input. The OME coils gave me about 2 I think. But Im sure Im going to lose the rear bumper soon?! .... Ive already bent it big time. Im actually thinking about going a bigger dia in the exhaust ... at the same time have it pop out somewhere better. Still doing my home work. The surf site has a load of awesome info alright ... will be reading that for days.

many thanks again

With a 3 or even 2" body lift and some 33" rubber, if you're still hindered heaps by the departue angle you may wanna consider a Hilux lol.
Having said that, mine hinders me a bit too, but my tow bar cross brace thing acts like a rock slider. I just drag her along it :D

My mate has a 94 V6 4 Runner and the rear departure angle sucks.
He has a 2" suspension lift and the Kaymar rear bumper with spare wheel carrier which has improved it.
But he has hit the spare tyre going up steep hills when the front end kicks up which has bent the wheel carrier mount slightly.
His needs a 2" body lift big time to get reasonable rear clearance.

I have a 3" body lift, 2" springs, 33" and I have a 7.50 x 16 spare under the rear. Dont really have a problem with the departure angle (thats what tow bars are for - ie: rear sliders). Never touch the spare either.

Its got an Extra cab grafted on to the back of it. If you look it actuall has all the frame there. Thats not a box its backed up to. Thats sitting on the back of it. But it gives an idea as to what could be done. If you lost the bottom of the guard and cut the rest of the frame off it would prob look ok..
