Aftermarket computers? Megasquirt!!

Post by SASS »

Im looking to put a Commodore V6 (ecotech) in the lux (keeping the G52)and was looking on the marks site at the price of the mem cals ect. these look rather expensive, are there any after market computers that will run the ecotechs? I wont need speedo interface ect as this will remain standard from the G52. Dose anyone know anything about the Megasquirt system (DIY computer)? could it run the motor effecively and efficently?
Ive never had anything to do with ecus befor so any imput would be greatly appreceated!!!!!
Cheers SASS

Try to find a manual motor to get the factory computer!

After market should run it, but will start costing some dollars! (computer and labour)

The new Megasquirt ecu is a diy bulid and will only cost $200 in parts?
Software is free and it is supposed to be a very fast highly tuneable ecu!
Only thing is that it only controlls injection not ignition. Dose the commo (ecotech) V6 have a stand alone ignition system or are the coils triggered by the ECU? Anyone used or played with a megasquirt befor? I think there was something about them in the rover thred not too long ago, any of u rover boys want to pipe in?
Cheers

Megasquirt will controll both injection and Ignition. Look for the thread in the Rover section it has all the info and links to the Aussie Megasquirt Forums.

Any idea what these are worth and how easy they are to tune?

There's the Ultra Megasquirt (I think that's the correct name?) which is a redesign of the original with ignition control. Only problem is it is still in the final design stages and not yet for sale.

There are also add on modules for the original Magasquirt which do ignition control. Seems to be a number of DIY people who have had great success with them.

Cost of haltech is $1,114.55 from capa (the only distributor I know that has freely accesable price lists)

Its a real time tuning computer so changes you make are instant. Best o get a base map and drive up and down a really long straight road till you tune it right. Or you could get it done on a dyno...

Heres the interesting bit. I am quite 100% sure the haltech is not available for the ecotech engines, only the series 1 and 2 motors. The capa site says vs manual but I believe it refers to the series 1 vs with the series 2 motor. I think the ecotech came out in the series 2 vs. I hope that made sense.

I think the safest and easiest option would be to get a custom memcal from any performance shop (tuned to your setup) as they can cancal all the bcm and that kind of thing. Not sure abou the speed sensor but.

Hope I helped a bit.

Just remembered about this Aussie made alternative too: http://www.adaptronic.com.au/

It tunes itself constantly- ie. no reprogramming everytime you do a mod!
