howdy people,
I was just after some oppinions on how a gq patrol (turbo diesel, will get transfer gears with tyres and 4.6 diffs) would handle 36 or 38 inch tyres.And actuall tire diameters on rim.
I would love to go the 38's but am unsure of how much problems they would create. I would only go the narrower style as room is a problem.
36 simex's fit reasonably well but I am unsure if the tsl swampers for example are a true 36". I don't want to buy a 36" tyre and only get a 35 if ya know what I mean.
Big red are you out there??? What do your 38's actually measure on the rim? Anyone else with actual measurements on rim of a 36 or 38 would be greatly appreciated as I can measure for clearances off a set of 36 simexs I can borrow.
If a 38 on rim is only 36-37 then I may be able to run em.
I have been on the interco site but don't really trust the measurements as I have seen them wrong before.

the measurements should be exactly accurate, on the measuring rim size. adjust the measurements accordingly, if you are using different size rims to the specified measuring rim.
for the record, my 38.5 x 14.5 tsl-sx, brand new, on a 15 x 10, measured roughly 38" +. my almost bald one was almost 37". the specified measuring rim is 12" wide.

i have 38.5x16 on my gq and it hits pretty badly, on the spring towers up front just (5 link also), the rear trailing arms, and front swaybar. thats part of the reason i am putting gu diffs on. obviously you need to cut the guards seriously as well up front (ute).

12.5x36x15 super swamper-36.3" tall on a 10 inch rim section width is 13.5 inches, 12.5x38x15-37.8 inches tall on a 10 inch rim section width is 12.8, 16x38.5x15-38.2 inches tall on a 10 inch rim section width is 15.4 inches. all specs are per iterco tire.i am installing a set of 12.5x36s on my soa mq.

from memory the Q78s aren exactly 36.. think they are 35.6
I run 36x13x16 TSL's on 16x8 cruiser offset rims.
Now ive been wheelin a fair bit and it only rubs on the drivers side spring tower at full flex, meaning that the diff could be perhaps offset to one side a little more (via panhard) to eliminate the rubbing.
Basically,, you've an ute.. so your rear end isnt a problem.
Front,, the guard towards the drivers door needs to be trimmed (i didnt do it enough with my swampers and when they landed after a *jump* at ormeau they went backwards and mashed into my guards even thou i had given them a minor trimming..
Since then,, they're still mashed in and they look alright (folded in now) instead of cuttin them off - and havent had any dramas with them.
the 5 link will allow you some adjustment of your castor and push your diff forward a bit more to allow some clearance to suit tyre of choice.
If you go 38's your gearing believe me will suck big time.
I run a 4.2 with GU turbo and yes you've more power than i have with your aftermarket setup with intercooler and will prolly have way much more grunt than i have. It is my opinion that 36's will be more than enough for your needs = i run 4.6 (2.8 standard gearing) gears on her and already the 36's are a handful on the clutch.
I have included two pictures of flex to give you some idea of what you'll be dealin with if you go larger than 36 inch tyres.

The GQ is a 5 inch with 40mm body lift and 5 link for comparison with 36's
To run 38s or more im guessing a 7 inch lift with some trimming.

had approx 8inch lift an 3 inch body lift at the time
with 5 link front an lengthened lower rears
also should have some with them on 8inch rims with the 6inch lift springs

I think I have decided to go for the 38 tsl's as I figure you always regret going smaller. So may as well go big and fix the problems later I will have transfer gears with the tyres so gearing shouldn't be too bad??
Tell me if I am wrong. Gearing with the simex 36's and standard gearing was reasonable but still high I guess
The 36 simexs rubbed the chassis on one side at the rear but I will be going a frame eventually so this should even out. Few mounts etc will need oxy cutting off too. The front I have cut prob. 3" from the rear of the guard and there seemed to be plenty of room (at least 2 " so I think they will fit. (if not will have to cut more!) I will have to extend my front bumpstops about 150mm! Tyres rub pretty hard on spring tower but
if I use some big offset rims it should help a lot too.
BTW the flex from the five link is incredible. I think I will have to limit it to run the big tyres but.
Will try and get some pics with the simex's on to show and soon will have the 38"s.
I cant wait to see the thing then.

IMHO your High range will be useless..
But what do you want to do with the truck? Pure comp truck?

Fourbys in moorooka sell them and at very good prices too!
TSL SX - the side lugs - they are alright - ive spoken to one or two people about them, they reckon they are difficult to 'bag' down as the sidewalls were too hard to allow the tyres to flex over the rocks.
I went the TSL's and they are a lot softer on the sidewalls to allow the tyres to slither over the rocks

I need to try and get some clearance under the fucking huge chassis and all the shit hanging down so I figure big tyres are the way to go.
My way of thinking is that these tyres will only ever see use a couple of times a month and only offroad so should last reasonably well. The way all my trucks have gone is that I piss fart around and spend heaps and then gradually step up bit by bit. I Would rather just bite the bullet and go big and worry later.
I have another set of tyres and wheels for when I go up the beach or camping etc. so high range will be fine for that.
Gearing should be ok once I have transfer gears and really I wont be using high range much with these tyres on.
I have just been spending a lot of time with oxy and grinders the last few days to make room and I have to suss out wheels and offsets but then should be a goer.
