Rear storage unit for a GU.

Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone has a rear storage unit for a GU Patrol? I'm looking at doing the job myself, out of marine ply and need a template (i.e. measurements) to work from. I would love to buy one but the finances are a bit tight, so i have to either make one or go with out.

Yeh i got one i made myself. fridge slide I bought and built a metal frame around it then put two ply drawers beside it, one above the other. could send pics by email if you like and measurements etc.

If you are going to make one dont use marine grade, use cabnet grade exterior ply. The diffrence is the are solid sheets of ply with no deffects wike knots or holes through the sheet, heaps stronger.

Marine ply has no voids etc inside and usually has more veneer layers for a given thickness. It is also made with a very high grade of glue. It has no defects in the faces either BUT it is hugely expensive. I have used exterior grade CD ply which is a reference to the grade of face veneers. 3/4 inch for bottoms and 1/2 inch for sides. heaps strong enough - it takes two people to carry them when full and they have not broken.

I have been using CD grade for over five years now with no problems what so ever. The bigger issue is how you put it together so that it cant come appart from currugations etc.

Pics of unit-only one drawer fitted. Bolt down bkts visible, I use the tie down loop mounting positions, child restraint etc - whichever fall in the right place. I used a "Black Widow" fridge slide and based just about every measurement on this and what would fit the car, while still being able to take it out when not used. I carry my tools around in the drawers, and as you can see the bottom one (which is bigger) has metal runners under to bear the weight ( i cant lift it when full). I glued the drawers together with PVA and made the joints very accurate (butt) for a good fit. Only used a pin gun, not screws for joints. It has survived one Simpson trip[ and numerous other weekenders and doesn'y even look like giving up yet. Mods - Use mesh on RHS as well cos stuff gets stuck when using drawers. glue laminex to bottom of drawers to slide more easily. It looks a bit rough but it is minimal weight while plenty strong.

im thinking of putting these on. But do you guys drive around with the unit in all the time? i mean is it bolted down permanently or do you remove it after a trip?
reason i ask is cos i dont want to be driving around with all that extra weight, plus if i want to put stuff in the back that doesnt fit in a drawer, what would i do?

usually do, same as cargo barrier, bit of a pain to take in/out, but sometimes you gotta. When its in, i cant be bothered taking it out and vice versa
