farked fuel tank

Post by muppet_man67 »

I came down real hard on the petrol tank the other day and added a huge dint to it. The fuel gauge now only reads to just below half. :? Soap is stopping it from leaking. I think It might need replacing. :x

Anyone got a spare tank for a sierra? :)

Anyone know if a widetrack tank will fit up easily to a coil sierra? ;)
Thanks to anyone who can help.

And no I dont have pics :D

they are different but will they work? The injection equipment in the coiler tank is useless to me anyway because I dont have injection.
Maybe it could be swapped over anyhow. Do you know anything about the mounts or fuel line connections etc if they are different or can be easily swapped? Whats greg going to do with it? would he swap if for a busted one and cash :D

I'll get hime to compare the 2 tanks. but i'm pretty sure where the sender unit bolts in is different from leafy to coily.

evryone is telling fibs. yes the tanks are different but it wont stop you fitting them.
I fitted one from a long wheel base 1 liter.
The bolt pattern is the same and size and shape are the same. the only difference being that the coily tank has a fuel sender that is interchangeable with a fuel pump sender for efi. My new tank has a drain plug (it may come in handy) and it has no dints :D

Also early models of sierra didnt have a little white bottle that sits in the panel just above the rear righthand wheel so I had no connection on the tank for the tube from this to go to.

Other then that everything was able to be clamped on and is working fine now exept for the fuel gauge which is permanantly sitting just below half Ill try swapping over the fuel gauges. I doubt that it is due to the tanks being incompatible. More likely that the fuel gauge is stuffed.

mines an early 1.0 Litre LWB and it does have the little white bottle thingy, and it is hooked up to my new tank.
drain plug is a great thing, just drain off a litre or so, evey now and then, fuel/carby will love ya.

If there is no provision for connection to the white bottle, and therefore the carbon cannister, you may have no tank breather..this is important as your tank may suck itself into a collapse....if needeed you can use a petrol cap that breathes...if your tank goes woosh when opened, it says no breather, or breather blocked up..christover

the leafy pickup had a thread (like a bolt) on it that we cut off then we just connected the hose to it with hose clamps. The tank I think was from a long wheelbase.

I just checked no woosh the breather is conected but as you said there is no provision on the tank for the white bottle. There is something connected to every hole.

1 pick up to supply pump.
1 return line for unused fuel from pump.
1 fill up breather (quick fill) that goes to the filler near the cap.
1 breather, which normally goes to white bottle, but can go straight to the carbon cannister under the bonnet.
Early zooks had breathing thru the fuel cap.
glad its all ok.
drain plugz r kewl.

out is too much pressure, but a little is normal when tank is low....but if pressure is too high you get flooding thru carb, even if not driving... the carbon cannisters can block up.....

if it sucks its also blocked on the in rather than out...

you can check by removing end of pipe and putting a filter on, see if car goes betterer.. christover

I followed the tube that is disconected it went to the little white bottle. I then followed the tube that exits the little white bottle it goes to the carbon canister. I have 3 tubes connected, a quick fill breather, a pickup and a return. My tank shouldnt be breathing. :?

not cool  but I bet the cap leaks enough air to breathe anyway :) happy new year

ps if you dont use the carbon cannister fer breather, it may be wise to block off the vaccuum pipe, as it may affect running? It goes from cannister to inlet manifold somewhere

vaccuum leak will only be small, not sure how exactly that would affect running.....the small amount of fuel vapour missing may be a prob..,.. suckin air may affect mixture slightlty ....too technical fer me, but I ran mine without the cannister fer a while, as it was blocked with mud, and just blocked the pipe to the carb with a small bolt and cable tie...it ran fine. christover
