Ideas on What 4wd to Buy ???

G'day guys,
Only new here.

Congrats on the nice looking forum.

I'm looking at getting my first 4x4 and want some of your ideas as to what I should look at.

Criteria;
Up to $13,000
Must have air con
Needs to tow my race car (about 1600kg with spares & trailer, but not long distances)
Will be my daily driver
Reasonably economical or at least the same as my current car (V8 Fairmont that uses about 420kms/68L = 16L/100kms city)
Auto or Manual
Ute or Wagon

Will be using it for light-medium off road & a little beach stuff. Won't be rock climbing or anything like that.

So, please give me your opinions and thanks in advance.

Can`t believe I`m saying this :roll:

but a early GQ would be the go, or a 60 series cruiser. If you looked around hard enough you`d find an early carbied 80 series but it would have very high km`s on it.

a1zook is still for sale i think its a good rig top 4wd and its in your price range and ya cant get anymore economical then a zook surely :o

Dunno how it'd tow though, probably weighs less than the trailer and race car

Apart from the capacity, what's the difference between the 3L & 4.2L GQ's & which is best?

What about a late 80's/early 90's Hilux or 4 Runner? They any good?

I think a zook would be a bit small.

The 3L is a bit of a lemon, the 4.2 is tried and tested and has a lot of scope for future mods and power upgrades if required.

I refused to beleive this but the 3.0litre in the GUs is apparently better at towing than the 4.2?

anyways a 4.2L diesel GQ is a good bet for $13k (im a toyota man, but they are too damn expensive)

u say that u wont go rockcrawling or any thing hard like that but just wait til u get the thing!!!!!

GQ has heaps of options pick up a copy of this months 4wd monthly for a full run down on them

diesel or petrol?? what would be best??

And air its got plenty u know old faithfull front windas and rear windas

Have a look at a early to mid 90's LWB factory intercooled TD Daihatsu Rocky. You should be able to pick up one with around 120 000km with everything, P/S, A/C, even electric windows in excellent condition for around $10k. Some people will snicker but, your towing requirements are more than adequately catered for, they are more capable off road than what a lot of people will give credit, and being 4 cylinder, cheaper rego than a 6. You will get around 10km to the litre, regardless of whether you are towing or not. Try getting all that in a more popular 4wd, for the price, and the lateness of the model.

Nice pic Moose, but with enough oil on the ground even th Mrs CRV can smoke them up.

I just heard from a few dealers that the trade in values on 3L gq was real low and that they were a bit of a lemon for Nissan. Dont know much about their mechanics or reliabily. :wink:

& light drive line !!!!

basically , VL 3.0 ( with carby ) , 300ZX 5spd & 4.3 diffs !!!!!
