Just picked up a 1986 RR on LPG. The engine is a 3.9 rebuild but on the trip back from Sydney it went like crap. Seemed to be missing badly and back fired several times, yes the rubber hose on was on loosley and it blew off twice. That was fun explaini g it to the wife!!
I've fitted a Bosch electronic dissy from my old RR and just drove around the block, but when I got home it stalled and now the gas regulator? is frozen. Any ideas.
Also I need a fuel tank as mine leaks and I can't use petrol at all. Any one got a good one for sale, or has anyone tried a pore in sealer that works.

RR on gas
Howdy: others might have more specific experience with RR gas, but I owned a VN V6 on gas for a few years, and it too did all the things you;ve described. First, LPG injected vehicles are very twitchy when it comes to spark plugs and coils. If one of the plugs foul, or the coil is mucking up, it will backfire like crazy. After backfiring, apart from all the hoses being blown apart, you might have to take the mixer off and check the diaphram . If the backfire jolted it out of kilter,( maybe why it stalls now?) take if off, clean the soot off with a clean rag, and put it back together. it's very similar in action to a CD 175 carby Lastly, when the regulator freezes up, that means there is no hot water circulating in it. There might be a blockage in the pipes from the engine, or, low coolant or a air pocket that upsets the flow. Give the car the onceover, a tune up and a flush and it should be OK.
Doesn't sound good. Try and check these.
Gas freezing up is only one thing and that is insufficient water in the cooling system. You must have running coolant throught the converter for them to work and if not they will freeze up. I'm not sure but if there's total internal failure on the converter it may also freeze but very unlikely.
Use of water and back fire also makes you wonder about head gaskets and burnt inlet valves but I hope your new electric dizzy fixed that. Back fires also bent the valley cover and that may need to be replaced.
The fuel tank I only know of bush remidies of caked soap on the external area over the leak. I think there are also pirmateck or similar products to patch over the outside.
Hope this points you in some direction. Keen to find out how you go.

If in dobt just smile, it won't change what is broken but it will make it feel a whole lot better.

That's whay I'll never have another car with it. I had a 93 Disco a few years back with LPG and it was a dead-set nightmare. I had nothing but problems as you had mentioned in your post. It spent several visits at the installer (which fitted the LPG, before I had bought the Disco) and still it was never right. I had a bad experience with LPG I guess, but put me off for life!!!!
The tank issue,get a new or good second hand job. Patching it up will work for a while and maybe a good option if your budget is tight, but at the end of the day you will have to spend the money anyway. it's hard I know (been there before) but trying to be 'cheap' sometimes brings you undone, I know from experience.

I have a different opinion.
My 79 4.4 RR is the first vehicle I have owned on gas.
Simplest fuel system I have ever seen.
Why I didn't install it on my XE 351 defies logic.
Cheap
Simple
Efficient
Clean
Available a lot of places
Good for 4WDing (angles)
I'm a convert!

I am assuming you have EFI.
Backfiring can knock the airflow meter out of adjustment and then the problem gets worse.
The main cause of freezing is low water/no hot water flow through the regulator.Check the water hoses are not turned off when you turn off the heater.Check that they have flow through them,ie one hose from each side of the water pump.
The other freezing problem is caused by excess gas flow,gas leak at reg
It pays to check reg body screws/bolts after freezing as frozen water expands and they often loosen off with the thaw.

I'm glad you are happy with your LPG because I sure was pissed off with mine after owning my Disco for a brief 8 months!!
The point on anles is one big advantage though on older Rangies, but the twin strommies are so good off-road it really doesn't matter.
