New boy with questions

Post by rhymus »

G'day, Raph's my name. Got a couple of questions I've not been able to find answers to in previous posts.
1. Water pump failed, took timing belt along too (6G72). Lost sleep after being told 3ltr is not a free spinner. Decided to fix after turning crank and not feeling/hearing anything bad. Got it all together and is working fine but have been told I should't have re-used the crank bolt. True or False?
2. All you blokes have cranked torsion bars but I'm not sure how to do this. Also, how is it you reindex the spline on the bars. Seems everyone can do this in their sleep but some more details would be helpful.
3. GQ GU coils for the rear end. Just garden variety stockers or are there some better than others.

Hey Ralph. I've got a 6g72 also. I had to replace the front crank seal and found the gear that the timing belt runs off was damaged. Picked up a newie from Mitsi dealer and asked about bolt replacement. He said that due to the high torque value setting of the bolt, it is recommended that it be replaced. Same goes with conrod bolts and head bolts. So I just put it back in to the correct torque and no dramas. Yes, the 6g72 is a free spinner where as the 6g74 (3.5 twin cams) are not. That makes it an ideal candidate for forced induction. No major problems if you break a belt; not to the valve train anyway. Search the old posts for info on torsion bar crank jobs. There are some pics and info on modifying bump stops also.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. Info helped but have been unable to find specifics on torsion bar adjustment in old posts just lots of general info. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places. Thanks again.

Welcome to the forum :D
Here's the procedure (with pics) for winding up torsion bars - http://www.4x4wire.com/mitsubishi/tech/ ... rsion_bar/
Here's a good thread about re-indexing torsion bars from the Trail Talk forum -

The 3.0 V6 is certainly a free spinner so if you snap a timing belt it won't damage anything.
The GQ/GU coils will fit in the rear of a Paj (just) but there are heaps of aftermarket 2-2.5" lift coils available made specifically for the Paj. Pedders, King, Dobinsons, OME, TJM, Ironman etc all can supply these a set of aftermarket rear coils are around $200-$250 a pair. I personally don't like the progressive rate style coil in the rear as they tend to sag too quick a linear rate coil is stiffer but will maintain it's height a lot better especially with a load.
I just luv my "clacker Jabber"

Thanks for that, very helpful. I had some idea how to do it but just needed clarification.
