Rock Sliders

Post by Tiny »

Hi All,

I am getting a rig ready for comp, and while I would love to get a nice set of sliders with airtanks built in and the sort, I can't justify the cost on the beast.....I am thinging about welding some up with some decent RHS just in a square as i dont have a tube bender, and don't want to fool around welding round stuff square!!!!!

Anyway my questiuon is does anyone see any probs doing this and any suggestions what guage wall on the RHS would be satifactory for the job.

Any pics of what others have done and any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tiny

Ps is on LWB GQ......anyone want to by the alloy side steps?????

sliders get beaten around a lot, if you were relying on them for the air, it could be an issue eventually

I would probably just make the sliders from a RHS 4mm maybe??
And mount an air tank somewhere else on the vehicle, underneath if you can find the space.
Like bogged said sliders are for bashing on rocks and would probably be an issue in the future if you made them your air tanks.

Sorry chris but you're wrong. Tube will bend well before RHS will in a slider application. Haultech use all RHS sills in the buggy's for this very reason. I would say 4mm will be plenty.

You can make them look neater with rectangular hollow section as the sit under the sill better, you don't want to increase the width more than you have to. That will give you one more thing to get stuck on it they are really wide.

On the rangies Haultech uses angle steel to rivet to the sill and weld rectangular section to it for the slider part.

One important thing is to "glue and screw" everything you want to attach to the body. Neutral cure roof and gutter silicon is the best stuff use plenty and the further strenghthen the whole setup.

When I had to pull the sliders off my old rangie, I had to drill out all the rivets and then cut the silicon with a stanley and prise them off with large screw drivers. With all my weight on one end of the sider and jumping up and down on them I couldn't get them to budge.

You need either 75x50x4mm RHS or 100x50x4mm RHS with at least 4 mounting points to be really strong. At a pinch you could get away with 3 mounts but 4 would be much stronger. My sliders are 75x50x3.2mm with 2 mounts on a single cab hilux and they are probably bent up by around 30mm in the middle. However I will be doing well to yours the punishment that I've given mine. Another option is to use 3.2mm and run a 75x50 unequal angle along the underneath and outside. This will make them much stronger. That's what Ruff had to do to reinforce his 75x50x3.2mm on buggy when they bent.

I think 3.2 would be fine as a slider. On my buggy the problem was that its not just a slider its part of the frame so it had no give at all. As a slider its still going to have that little bit of flex. Mine doesnt have this as everything ties into it. But after putting some 75X50x6 on the lower outside it seams to be holding up fine.

It does because it has 4 radiused edges to bend. Where as a tube only has one. Once the tube is dinted it will just keep bending where as you can dint one corner of RHS and it will still have the other 3 corners holding it together.

My green hilux is still running the same sliders(75x50x3.2RHS) it has done for years and they were only just starting to show signs of bending when i sold it.

Well mine are bent and if I had the chance to do them again, then they'd be from 4mm or 3.2 with an angle for reinforcement.

Thanks Bogged i checked out that site as well as a few others, did a bit of searching around here too and i think i will go u bolts around the chassis to mount it so its not permanent. 50x50x4 will that be strong enough? or 75mm is a must?

thanks for the photos lads... Hoonz yours look heavy duty! especially that rear mount!

also what do you guys finish them with? powder coating? spraying them wont be good enough, is there some kind of anti rust treatment you can do to them?
