Body lift on a GU

Hey has anyone done a body lift on a GU wagon?

just curious to see how hard it is? is it like a GQ

i know i'll probably get told to do a search but i couldnt find anything on a GU

Unlikely to find anything on a bodylift for a GU wagon - technically it's illegal because of the air bags.

On my GU coil cab, the install was pretty much identical to others that I've done on GQ utes so I can't see it being too much different for the wagons.
I'm not very good looking, so I guess I better be useful . . .

oh really

i have seen pictures of GU's wagons that have body lifts.

does this mean the warranty is void

2 dudes in our club wanted body lifts, and 3 different Vicroads engineers wouldnt touch it - Kev Williams was one of them.


Of course it can be done, anything can be done, but if its legal is another question.

no, thats why they wouldnt engineer it.
One engineer told Les our club driver training dude, if he is willing to drive his car into a wall at 80kph to prove it would work, he would pass it.

just as a point of reference, 36 swampers fit on a gu with 3" spring lift so take your pick with the way you lift your car but match it to tyre size also

yup, cant find that photo anymore of steve rolys with the Q78s on his... they filled the guards well..

I've got a 3" lift with 35's which fill the guards nicely but want more clearance with the sills. Was thinking another inch with the springs and another inch with blocks would've done nicely....

Nice car GUJohnno,
They look good with some larger rubber.
Do you have any idea what the hight of your roof is out of interest ?
I am presuming about 5" more than normal ? so my guess is if a car park will take 2.0m your pushing it, but if its 2.1m you would be fine ?

Sounds about right. I had checked ot some time ago but forgot what the measurement was... :?
It does fit the 2.1m car parks tho. With the white stick off that is.

Just checked the hight of my garage, which is 2010mm high. I just fits in there.

When there isn't too much mess in there that is.

Maybe we should start a thread to find the messiest garage...... :lol:

I was talking to Hobsy at Procomp today and they have a customer who has gotton permision from their insurer and VicRoads to disengage the air bag. He told the insurer that he was worried about it going off whilst driving off road.
I guess if they're willing to give written permision to do this then you should be able to get a body lift??
I'm also keen to get a tube bar to match and if I can get this permision then it should be full steam ahead. :D

are u going to get rid of your ARB bar?

a few guys have made tube bars for GU's how come your thinking of going tube?

u still thinking of doing a body lift ?

am thinking of going to a 5" springs lift and getting rid of the LTRs

Yep... I'll sell the ARB bar

I'm starting to do a few navigational comps and the tube bar will be lighter, I'm getting a high mount winch cheap and will run a nylon type cable.

I'm keen to get a 2" body lift. The rear tyres rub quite a bit at the top and I dont think you get much extra flex with a 4" lift compared t a 3". Besides the car drives nicely with the 3" as the geometry is not too much out of whack.

So the body lift will help with sill clearance, flex at the rear and should look great with the new bar and lights. :D

The price from Procomp is way under that. But the one your quoting probably includes an engineers certificate.

I have 2inch body lift in my gu done it myself no great dramas in doing getting long enough bolts for front and rear mounts were the hardest engineer said he would not pass it at this time until he has proof air bags will work i cant see why they wont the sensors are still in the same location i have been told that air bag equipped vehicles have been passed am enquiring if air bags are an option can they be taken out

Isnt the problem with body lifting a Gu Air bag wagon is that if you want to modify your Air bag Bar to match the body lift.
If you are happy to leave the Air bag approved bar in its standard mounting position, it is not a problem.
What does the body lift have to do with the Crush Cans and sensors in the chassis ?
I have seen body lifted Gu wagons with Air bag ARB Safari bars that dont interfear with headlights !

Just a thought !

At the front there is a bolt that gets screwed up against the face of the bullbar. If you raised the bar this would be affected. Probably if you left the bar where it is there shouldn't be a problem. But I want to get another bar anyway. So if I can get approval i'll go for it.
I've asked Paul at Procomp to find out what insurance company the other guy was with.

The ARB bar has that bolt that is in front of the chassis rails what it is supposed to do i am not sure as the bar is still bolted to chassis the original nissin bar is bolted to the chassis and does not have this bolt and this bar is air bag compatible i modified the mounts that hold the bar to the chassis mounts the mounts to the chassis are seperate so that now the bar is in the same relationship as original if i can figure out how to post pics i will

No offence, but sounds like excrement to me... How many 10's of thousands of 4wds are out there with airbags offroading that never go off? Up the cape on th' corrigations, etc etc

Why would his go off and the other thousands not go off??

what might happen and what he tells the insurer may be entirely different things... :roll:

and they are extremely stupid to our advantage for believing him!

speaking of excretement, all these threads about insurance have been getting me so pissed off about the whole legal/insure side of 4x4. (who hasnt) but something we just have to remember is that they are out to make money not to give it away. So if they find something wrong with your car they will hold on to their cash with their cold clammy dead insurance hands until death do they part.
