Post by duncan »

As it says im going to make one for the project 90 shorty 5 speed but just thought id ask if anyone has already done it and could give me some photos or plans .Doing this because it was a pain to remove the gearbox as the top of the bell housing was getting cught on the fly wheel finnaly got it out but with lots of force that was even with the motor on a jack so i could raise or lower it is this just mine or is there a easier way to do this

have done on this on a mates zook.
we used channel that just fits over the crossmember (from the top)& flat bar (that fits on the inside of the crossmember from the bottom) both about 4in long.
fit 1 channel & flat bar each side of the box(with vice grips in the centre of the plate) drill 2 holes at 45 degree angles of each other each side of the vice grips, now remove the grips & cut the the crossmember then refit with bolts.
we welded the top pieces to the chassis side & the flat bar to the removable piece so they wouldn't get mixed up while the box is out & makes it easyer locate.

Tube one looks the goods. Not sure I like the flat bar one.

With 2" body lift taking the box out of my ute is a PoP. Had to do it in my stock DD a while back. What a pain that was. Removable crossmember would sure make that a lot easier.

Despite this the greatest benefit IMO would be you get rid of the rock anchor that hangs down below the chassis on the driver's side end. With a removable crossmember and a little lift of the xfer case you could make a flat skid plate and gain some valuable underbelly clearance.

Make sure you allow clearance for the front tailshaft on full suspension compression :)
