Need info on hilux diif gears.Urgent!!!!

Post by mattsluxtruck »

Hi guys i have an 89 lux with a 253 conversion on gas running 33'' muds and standard 2.8d diff gearing. My problem is it screams it head off on the highway and you need to change gears that quick accelerating its like rowing a boat and really shitting me. Can some one out there suggest a solution for me is it box or diff ratios at fault?(standard 5 speed). If there is an idea will anything else toyota fit to fi this cause if i spend too much more coin on this thing and not the house at the moment i will be living in with the dog.
Any help very much thankfull for
Cheers Matt

you should be running 4.30:1 Diff ratios

Have a look at your axle code, it should read g284

you can get 4.1:1, 3.9:1, 3.7:1, 3.54:1 ratios

Wheel lifting stuff with those, you wouldn't keep the front wheels on the ground!

My brother once put a worked 253 in his Hilux with 4.875 ratios & it would lift the front wheels off the ground!

Useless on the highway as it sucked way too much fuel!

The 2.8d gearing (definetly 4.3) should be OK- with 33's you'd be about 2700 rpm? at 100km/h or less (remember the bigger tyres need speedo recalibration), so my guess is maybe you have the 4.88 gears already? If you don't know history of car don't trust the code written on compliance plate.

As said b4 there is a heap of higher ratios available to swap in- the 3.9 or 4.1 would cut the revs down heaps.

What ever your option is you will be living with the dog, either changing your ratio`s to 4.1 rear with High pinion front or get bigger tyres

i think you will find 2.8D hilux diffs are 4.55:1, not 4.3:1

Next step up to correct 33" tires on a 2.8 is a 4.88:1 set of gears
2005 HDJ100 Manual, ARB bar, XD9000 winch, ARB rooftop tent + awning, Drawers, Engel, 2" OME lift, 285/75R16 KM2's, iCom, HID XGT's.

It is your diff ratios that are wrong for your V8
Check the ratios in it now
This is easily done for 1 revolution of the wheel the tail shaft revolves say 4.8 times . That is your diff ratio.

4.l should be about right for your V8 with 33"s
Keep it simple

Hi guys finally got the drive to check ratio. Yep they are 4.3's wondering if worth effort to go down to 4.1's worried 3.7's might load up too much on take off and break will be fitting 35's one day so 4.1's are probably the go when fitting the lockers sitting around waiting for the drive to be installed. Does anyone out there have a cheap set of 4.1's?

By the way have found a good source of drive to work on a lux is in 700ml bottles marked JACK DANIELS.

Thanx for all your help guys

Sorry but there are times i just got to call BULLSHIT and this is one of them!

I have seen Worked 253s,308s and Turbo'd Supra motors fitted to hilux's and im yet see one lift both front wheels off the ground. I have seen a 308 one pick the left front off the ground coming out of a left hand turn but i have also seen a dirty old 18R do the same. And most of these were running 4.88 gears, lockers And Decent Rubber.

Offroad doesnt count. Anything can lift the front tyres off the ground offroad. I have seen Sigmas do this :D

What sort of Revs are we talking at 100Ks. With 4.3s and 33" tyres it shouldnt be too bad i would have thought. You could go to 4.1 gears but these are hard to find and usually get good $$. But if you think 4.1 gears will help. See if you can borrow some 35s first and take it for a drive as this should give about the same results.
