it's not as simple as that (it never is eh?)

most cruisers 1978 to 1989(ish) (split transfer case) in australia have 1.997:1 low range. the exception is bunderas which mostly have 2.29:1 low range, and allegedly some automatic 60 series have 2.488:1 low range however this might only be "grey" imported ones. It's northing much to do with petrol or diesel.

The cheapest, easiest, best way to get lower low range gearing is to install an aftermarket gar set (eg Marks) - the advantage of getting a set of bundy gears is only 15%, and you usually have to buy a whole gearbox and transfer case to get them, which will set you back anything from $500 to $2000.

with the marks gears you get 3.08:1 low range for approx $1600 (plus installation), far better (55%) improvement - better value for money

cheers
