bubs, could you please let me know how you did the engine mounts...
Also it looks like my diff wont be a problem with the sump but the front panhard rod might be, have to drop out thr suspension to check the travel.

If I can flip around the intake manifold it will be better for my snorkel too - very glad you posted those pictures.

thanks,
grazza

-BTW, you can tell I dont have my fourby - playing on the net of a Sunday morning, what the? !!!!!!

Did you consider using the toyota auto and mating this to the patrol transfer? I ask because I am putting a crown (rear sump) 1UZ-FE into my RR and I am thinking of ditching the RR transfer and putting in a GQ transfer. Any reasons why this would not work?

I have seen one mated to a cruiser transfer in a FJ40 SWB but I have not seen one done to a patrol tranfer.

We had thought of that but this was easier, plus there is no doubt the Nissan box is stronger than the Toyota

Mate the 1UZ up to the ZF? auto

I would mate to the zf if I have one. I still have an LT95, early 4 speed manual/transfer in one, which is easy to adapt to but I thought while I was there I might go to an auto. I bought a front cut so I have one sitting there and I bought a crown cut so I have separate engine and transmission computers so I can get if shifting properly.

Auto-eng,

I have the 1UZ-FE in my RR.

I used the LT230 5 speed manual and RR transfer

All Crown engines are mid sump.

Soarer SC400 is rear sump.

I used a mid sump alloy section and a rear sump oil pan with an adaptor plate to shift the sump rearward. I have my starter motor behind the oil pan instead of in the valley. This leaves room for a future supercharger and intercooler set up I am working on.

I used Tex's headers which had to be modified to fit. The engine is canted over to the passengers side to clear the headers from the chassis rails.

I'm constantly refining the swap but it is worth the effort.
Cheers,

Zuffen

So how is this set up running now. What is fuel consumption like compared to a Carby 4.2 petrol patrol. Is any body building of the shelf adapters for these Toyo engines into patrols. I am very close to taking the plunge and putting an eight into my truck with an Auto behind it. I like the idea of 78kgs lighter and twice as fast with awsome rev range for riding gears. With 3.9's and heaps of high reving horse power with 35's hill climbing could become very quick in extreme winch competitions and outback challenges.

Mine is at least a month away from completion...

The Rod Shop now apparently have apapters for auto and manual, and custom sumps.
http://www.rodshop.com.au/

This is after I had a custom billet aluminium plate made up which cost a lot more time and money (using the Nissan manual, I dont like autos)

I am using a mid-sump which will supposedly work but I have not seen the engine fitted yet so dont guarantee it.

Bubs, would love to know the how your conversion went, for power and economy.

power with auto, 32's, 3.9 diffs it put down 105kw at the rear wheels, a little less than a 5 litre conversion

it is currently using 20L/100km better than a 4.2 in a LWB, we are trying to improve this, changing diffs to make it easier on the engine especially cause the owner is changing to 33's

when we did the conversion no one had an adaptor any nissan to toy V8

for the auto conversion i had to use adaptors from 2 manufactures and made an adaptor for the torque convertor

the mid sump will not work with the conversion unless your engine is way up, the engine sits to far forward to clear the fire wall

Hopefully the mechanics are back at work this week, if so, they should have no reason not to have the engine mounted by the end of the week.
Will have to wait and see about the sump, I'm betting they have got it wrong, again...

I am surprised about the economy figures, I know Toyota quote as little as 9L/100 in the Lexus so I was hoping for around 15-16L/100 in the Patrol.

I am running a SWB GQ with 33" MTR's so it may be a little better. When I get it I will take it for a long miserly run and see what I can get. Then again I know its going to be hard to not keep the boot in...

105Kw, seems a lot of work for a small amount of output and it sounds pretty thirsty too. I dont suppose torque is particularly strong either?

I don't understand why people put toyota engines in a Nissan! The VH45 is a much better engine in all aspects except it is 11kg heavier and bigger(see the comparison on my web page). Parts are just as easy to get as the Toyota (Infiniti was sold in Australia, and alot of service parts are interchangable with other Nissans.

The engine conversion is easy - especially when you are keeping the auto. You just make one engine mount, a gearbox mount adaptor, move the powersteering and alternator to the opposite sides and make an exhaust. The wiring is definately easier too

The auto that comes with the Infiniti has subtle but important differences to the Patrol auto that will make it handle more abuse and make the valvebody conversions unneccessary. The transfercase still bolts on though.

I wouild like to know how many Nissan Q45's were sold in Australia - anyone seen one?

The Infinity brand only existed between 1993 and 1997 and the Q45 was priced at $140,000, and was only through 4 dealers.

I dont give a damn about who made the engine, I want to take my car touring and I need ready access to parts, many of which the Landcruiser 4.7L engine shares with the 4.0L. Quite a few Landcruiser dealers/parts around Australia.

I do hope the VH45 becomes more prevelant in Australia (Nissan are rumoured to be re-introducing the Infiniti brand) but I am happy with my choice.

Still, a simple turbo fitup to a TB42 can easily produce 200Kw at the wheels on petrol or a bit less on a straight gas setup on which no computer is necessary.

you should try putting in the ecu from the manual plugging it in and see if it is the ecu that differs or you are just losing all your power through the auto but i wouldn't think you would lose that much through a auto trans

There are a number of Victorian winch challenge trucks running turboed TB42 and TB45. Most are running modifed factory EFI intake manifolds, relativley stock heads, stock bottom ends and a variety of aftermarket ECUs; Autronic etc. The exhaust manifolds are either custom header types or cast aftermarket ones. Front mount intercoolers are common and the turbo specs vary. Most of these trucks have cracked 200Kw without too much trouble. There is also a couple running straight gas systems with turbos. A stock ignition ( points or electronic conversion) can run these ones though obviously the better the system the more power you are going to make. The gas ones are mostly down on output compared to the petrol ones but it is a budget way to do it.
No non gen motors, no conversion hassles and reliability issues and lotsa power. Ever thought a GQ could carry a front left wheel like a drag car?

bubs, I can lend you a laptop if you like - just need a serial port?

Are you hoping to plug it into the Toyota ECU or are you using something different?

I am a little concerned that the Crown engines are de-tuned (like the L-series was for trucks) In which case maybe a Unichip can overcome this. I want to avoid a non-factory ECU of possible, although I realise a Motec, Autronic or Haltech will give the best performance.

Mine should be ready by the end of next week - the exhaust guy has it now.
