GU Heating up??

Post by Elmo »

old mans GU patrol is getting a little bit hot, got a 4.2td cab chassis, had glenn binskin work his magic over the motor about 2yrs ago, had safari intercooler in from 2weeks after he brought it new

we never really thought the intercooler actually made any difference as what it made up in cooler air, it lost in the fact it blocks 1/3 of radiator, so thinking of mounting up top, like new style

also, as were heading off in april for 2months to do a major trip out west incl simpson, french line and canning, plus more, we got thinking a 3-core radiator might be nice

anyone had any ideas as to above ideas???

it will cool better by mounting it on top getting more air flow to the radiator if anything buy a spare radiator or buy this 3 core and keep this one for a spare you never know when a hole will occur

You could try the PWR alloy radiator. I've just put one in mine and it works a treat. The highway temp hasn't changed but when its loaded up and working hard it still doesn't change :D . It's straight out of thier catalog and bolts straight in. The only thing I had to do is cut the bolt that holds the aircon hose to the top radiator mount short as it was hitting on the top of the tank. Looks horn too.

I was lucky and got mine for $700 but I'm pretty sure they retail for around $1200ish. Shouldn't get too clogged up its got to get passed the oil cooler, air condenser and mabey soon to be a radiator for a water/air intercooler. Still weighing up the pro's and con's.

ive just come back from holidays, and my GU overheated. to the point where the radiator cap came off and leaked out all coolant. fortunatly got to it in time and filled it back up with water....
screwed something in the engine tho, engine light is on and hasnt turned off since, but it seems to be running fine with more coolant.

My next investment is the alloy radiator that toughnut mentioned, 2 of my mates had them installed and they havent seen the temp needle move past normal temp.

If your GU got to the point where your radiator cap came off, you got to it in time for what? Dinner? You would be extremely lucky if theres no damage... blowing the cap, you didnt notice the temp before that?

Also theres 1000's of GQ/GU etc gettin round with stock or 4 core rads that dont cost $1200.00 like the desert cooler ones.. Throw a stick thru a $1200 radiator is a little worse than a $400 4 core....

well it wasnt from the actualy radiator that popped, it was from the side filler thingi...dont know what its called.

anyway, the temp didnt actually move until i stopped the car and popped the bonet and noticed coolant spitting out everywhere.

mates think i didnt screw on the cap tight enough, but if that was the case, it would of popped somewhere along the 400km trip up north.

anyway, i changed a fuse and its running perfectly now, engine light is off, all i need to do is upgrade the cooling system.

I'm bloody thankful for the support that I get along with the discount price of the radiator from my sponsor.

went for a bit of drive this morning to suss out what you need to do to move the intercooler to top of motor, we priced a bonnet scoop from central coast 4x4 wreckers this morning, $175 second hand, and we still would have had to paint it yet, there $190 new from maitland nissan..........is this normal price??

hoonz......yeah got twin hella predators and a 9000lb warn winch, so got a bit of blockage.....

toughnut.......have you got the contact details for PWR, i've been trying to find them for the last few days, cant find em anywhere

bogged...... what are these cheaper radiators you mention???
