Guys,
When the new Patrol arrives I'm ditching the Bridgestone’s for a better tyre. I want to keep the 17inch alloys so this restricts my options. I currently run BFG muddies on my Navara and have used them before as well.
My question is to Claw and MTR owners. What type of Km's and how bad is the road noise from the Claws or MTR's verses the BFG muddies?

the radial claws when new are the same as bfg muds the kms i cant' really tell you but they are wearing the same as my mate who has bfg's when the claws get down a bit you can feel a little vibration when taking off due to the claw like tread but i chose them over the muds due to their off road performance as they are heaps better than bfg's can't really compare to mtr's haven't had them but i seem to see alot of them for sale so maybe the owners aren't happy with them

Bigsteve - The Patrol is a daily driver and we do a lot of on and off road km's so I dont really want the hassel of swapping rims when I want to have a play.
Bartso - I'm leaning towards the Claws, just for something different as everyone up here run BFG A/T's or M/T's. I just dont know much about them...

Go the BFGs. I don't trust my MT/Rs in the mud - they're better than most tyres, but I don't think they're as good as BFGs. And on loose climbs I'm a little disappointed with grip - I was hoping for better.
I'm not sure Baja Claws are good for lateral grip i.e. cornering on dirt roads could be a little more exciting than normal.
And you are aware that a 285/75-17 will be closer to 34 inches than 33? A 285/75 on a 16" rim is 33" overall diameter.

Big hassle, 1x wheelbrace, 1x trolley jack under diffs up and changed in under all 4 in 20 mins, also allows you to check brake pads and clean all the mud out properly - the shit you THINK you have hosed out but never do.
You have the best of both worlds.. safer road tires, and safer better offroad tires.. Have been doing the 2 sets for 3 yrs, mine is also a daily driver...

I drove my bosses Patrol (fitted with 33x12.50R17 Claws) from Mt Isa to the Gulf and back to Brisbane.
Was really impressed with their on road manners. Handled well and the noise level was negligible (less noise than I expected from such an aggressive tyre).
IMO you won't be disappointed with the Claws.

I've driven utes, wagons and short wheel bases on the Claws and other 'normal muddies' and found that if you are going to slide sideways, it's doesn't matter what tyre you run, they all slide about the same......just put your right foot down harder

they are noisey when wearing, bout same as my old BFG's at similar kms. they are about 70% now.

Pirellis have a shit rep in offroad tires. I would go Michelin.

Seen that alot too but Beebees appear to behave on side slopes.
Tyre life and road noise.... X-Terrains, they make great road tyres.
Better and quieter onroad than the others.
Can do the fun stuff the others do better than an AT but not as good as the others, does that make sense?

i run the claws and love em. a few mates hate their mtr's some like em, i wouldn't get mtrs as the claws are that good on road they are more than safe / acceptable and far better when you need em

Don't the MTR's also have the biggest (Thickest) sidewalls?
I think it depends on your prefered driving medium, In the Mud the MickyT's will kick and on the Rocks the soft Silica MTR's will win hands down. All tyres have there strong and weak points.
If longevity is your main requirment , get two sets of rims, AT's on one ET2's on the other!

285/70/17 BFG MT are $380 ea
33/12.5/17 MT Claws are $368 ea
No price for MTR as they not out in 17's yet.
You city boys would get a better price and you can not compare prices against at set of 16 or 15 as the options in 17 is very limited at the moment.

I got mtrs 33's- 15s granted for $250 got 35s now for $300 so tradeing ya rims infor some other rims if they fit and spare tyre cash may look good still and open up tyre choices????? an option.. those rims do look good but
Claws slightly dearer in 33's for political reasons i believe..... am trying to sell my mtrs in 35 to get claws as shit in serious mud
