Battery was nearing the end of its life so I thought that was what it was, replaced it with a newy and it still wouldn't start....
Next step starter motor, same symptons.
Turn the key and get a click from the starter motor but no turn. I cranked the engine by hand and it is free etc.
Not my car but Im swingin the spanners, help me please asap.
btw, there is definate power getting to the starter of course but how many volts should be on the main wire???12?

Thanks for the info guys, the new/secondhand starter is stuffed too. Might be time for a brand new one.
The only thing I hadent checked was by bench testing them, cog comes out but no spin on both so the solenoids are gooooone on both IMO, already checked the relay etc too.
So until we sort a new moter out monday or tuesday we won't know, I am 93% sure

I had similar behaviour from my Sigma - turned out the brushes were worn about as far as they go, so they wouldn't always make good contact. Easy check is a short length of pipe, and give the body of the starter motor (NOT the solenoid) a few good thumps. This is often enough to dislodge the brushes and get a few more starts.

I have had the same sort of thing, picked up a couple of old second hand starters for the rangie and went through them pretty quickly, found an aftermarket on that fits rangies from 1970 - 2000 cost about $250 from memory, reduction gear etc. Best thing I did, saved a heap of hassle
In short get a new one and that is one more job you don't have to worry about re-doing
