Cousin wants to mod his zook need help

My cousin has bought this zook as you can see its rather stock.



He has approx. $1000 to spend on it, and wants to know what he can do for that price range.

Lift and tyres is what he is hoping for.

i did my lift real budget. but not ideally suited.

i got a quote for a 2" body lift for $400. thats with the proper polyurathene(?spelling?) stuff. round, and black, so doesn't stick out for cops to chase ya. and thats in DARWIN, i think it would be a bit cheaper down south.

DON'T USE BOX SECTION TUBE FOR BODY LIFT. (from experience) do it once, do it properly.

on suspension, theres a few ways to go about it, but i think the most common is to go OME, which last time i checked, was $1500 for front struts, front coils, rear shocks, and rear coils. all up, gave a 30-40mm lift, about 1"-1.5". struts on their own are about $350 each, (when i checked at ARB in darwin) and they are also longer than stock.

with the rear end, you can find some toyota cressida shocks, as they are heaps longer than stockers, and a few people are using them. i'm using commodore shocks.

you can also get some coil spacers if you dont have the money for the complete OME kit. they have 1", 1.5" and 2" spacers for the VIT. if you get the 1" or the 1.5", you can probably use then with the OME kit when you get it.


Duh, i just reread the post, its for your cousin right? and that vit look pretty straight, but those tiny slicks don't do it any justice.

Get him to come to a suzuki club meeting He will meet some very helpful people . For that money I would be looking at a home installed body lift and some larger more aggresive tyres.

- Some steelies to fit the tyres to (Unless they'll fit on the stock rims)

This is only ever meant to be a budget upgrade ;-)

I got my 31" MT/Rs for about $900 for 4. i already had some old 15"x8" ford F100 rims (cost $10 each) got a quote for some new sunnies when i got my tyres, $90 each.... not so budget, maybe cheaper down south again.

i'm not too sure you can fit 31" with only 2" lift, but if you're not worried about some fender trimming, then its possible. the front guard will need to be cut a bit or else the rear of the tyre will rub a lot, and the firewall to will need to be attended to with a BFH. i had 31"s on my Vit with no lift once, but with 2" only, you will rub on full stuff at the rear.

standard rims are 5.5" wide, and its illegal to mount 215/75R15 cos they require a 6" rim.

EDIT: oops. my bad, i did mean the 235/75 though.

I ran 235/75 mudders on standard zook 5.5" rims for over 5 years with no probs.....Legally, of course they should be fitted to 6" rims, but also in some states that size is illegal on a zook anyway...christover

g ur only up to about two two and a half . (cheap) wait till wednsday ill let u know round bout 150 for the front. i ran steel tubing for six munths including jumping ,big hills. hey it lasted longer than my diff housing

My recommendations for $1000.....

30mm coil spacers rear, 15mm coil spacers front (gives 30mm lift too). About $120 give or take.

235/75/15 tyres (29" in the old measurement). Secondhand would be about $300, new about $750 for 5. Will fit (I believe legally) on 5.5" rims, but can go no larger on those rims.

Rear shockers - use whatever suits - check out autobarn or supercheap. You'd be looking 520-540mm long to be right with the spacers.

Looking at like $60 a pair to $120 for 4wd ones. Proper 4wd ones would be worth maybe $70-90 each withouh buying the ones with the most poseworthy brand names.

If you do go brand name make sure the length is more than just +30mm for the spacer, since the vitara ones are too short in stock form for good flex anyway.


The I'd recommend making a tank protector up - would be maybe $100-200 depending on who what and how.

Otherwise, if you got your tyres secondhand you could look at OME front struts for about $400, or else you'll need to do the front strut top flip or buy a spacer. About 40mm is the most you can hope to get out of the front. OME are without a doubt the best front struts on the market for the Vitara, but their rears are way too short to be any good at all.


You could also get body lift instead of coil spacers, probably a little bit more, although most guys in 4wd clubs could show you how pretty easily.

Vitara first and foremost needs more ground clearance - that means either suspension or body lift and tyres.

The above gives about 2 1/2" all up lift which is a huge difference.

Without cutting you need 2" body lift and 2" suspension lift to clear 31"s.

I found 2" lift enough to clear 30"s, and depending on how hard he wants to go I'd say 30"s or 235/75 is enough to have lots of fun with, wihtout all the hassles of gearing and breakage issues.

I felt my vitara (89 Soft top) was a better package on 30"s than 31"s in many ways.... better on the road (especially on the highway), better gearing for offroad, enough power to throw the mud out (which it struggled with 31"s), didnt need butchery to fit etc etc.
