Do a seach on GQ's buildup from a 2.8TD to a 4.2 TD
i knew someone was going to say this....
for more power if its a GU you could try moton's and probably get your injector pump worked over by a diesel specialist and get a 3" exhaust

Upping boost only on the GU 2.8 does nothing. Factory is 11.5 PSi and I upped it to 18 and you could not notice a thing - a bag of ice on the intercooler does more.
Also has a 3" mandrel bent straight through exhaust with no muffler fitted and I think I lost some low down torque (not much but enough for the 2.8 to notice).
The only thing that will help that is probably the cheapest option is to try a piggyback computer such as Motsons or Rapid. I had a Motson's and with boost increased to 14.5 PSi you get around 15% more power and around 30% more torque - nearly the same as a 3 litre GU with no increase in fuel consumption. Does blow a bit of black smoke though when worked hard.
By the way I have one for sale if you want it - $900 and its all your ($1400 from Motsons). Will even help fit. Dyno can be seen at http://members.optusnet.com.au/~grungle229/Patrol/images/motson's%20enhancer.jpg

how cheap is that.. all you would have to do is spend another 10k for a td42t conversion and your set.

I have a ZD30 turbo suit 3ltr GU. I have had thought that this turbo would be well mated to a 2.8 as it is similar litres and diesel. It interests me because they are ball bearing and variable vane. They are a big turbo compared to the std turbo. The mating pattern on a ZD30 is triangular and I have a feeling that a 2.8 is the same (someone correct me if I am wrong). No one I know has a 2.8 to try it on but I want to try it. When I do I'll let you know how it went. I 3ltr is a little engine and they fly along quite well, so why can't it work on a 2.8. I actually have 2 ZD30 turbos and I would like to see how one would go with the turbo on it. Even looking at a 2.8GU to try myself.
Cheers

Sorry to rain on your parade. But just how are you going to control the variable vane on the ZD 30 turbo without the ZD30 ECU? It won't work unless you have the electronics to make it work.

They work on vacum for the variable vane. I was going to use a staged boost controller, that way you can have high/low boost options. After all it is still mechanically driven ie exhaust. I'll see what more info I can get. I paid $500 ea for them.
A Garrett variable vane turbocharger works by adjusting the gas throat section at the inlet of the turbine wheel in order to optimize turbine power with the required flow velocity.
At low engine speed and small gas flow, the turbocharger reduces the throat section, increasing turbine power and boost pressure. At full engine speed and high gas flow, the VNTâ„¢ turbocharger increases the throat section, avoiding turbocharger overspeed and maintaining the booster pressure required by the engine.
The throat section modulation can be controlled directly by the compressor pressure through the use of a pressure actuator, or by the engine management system using a vacuum actuator.

will you also do the dyno tuning?Grungle wrote:Upping boost only on the GU 2.8 does nothing. Factory is 11.5 PSi and I upped it to 18 and you could not notice a thing - a bag of ice on the intercooler does more.
