this has been talked about in the past few weeks heaps there are a number of threads for pro and cons for the 3L.

you have to make up your mind

if you buying second hand bu buy atleast a series 3

if you want to keep it long term out of warranty go the 4,2

i would personally go 4.2 which i have less electronics and goes harder than 3l with its tune and boost.

4.2 will hold its value more as well

the reason i ask about the 3l is that they are a damn site cheaper than the 4.2 and more readily available. i would look out of qld but i need to trade the paj in on the new one and i had spoken to couple of dealers outside of qld last year and told them what i had and they all said they wouldn't be interested.

you can still find a decent 4.2 with few accessories out there for under 40k with less or around 100k on the clock

When I was looking a few months ago I did the same thing 3L is known to melt pistons so you need to get the series 3 to get a good one which will cost you $$$, I picked up a 2000 4.2TD for $25k and it had the turbo and exhaust done and now I'm bolting on the intercooler and will cost me about $30k all up by the time I'm finished putting all the Bling bits on the 4.2 just is a better running gear all round and has more pull, you'll spend a least $3000 on the turbo to get the 3L to pull as good. I tow a camper and hardly every get out of 5th gear even up steep hills "GOD I LUV IT" should of got it before I went to the Cape
