Gq manual Gear Selection probs
Everything on clutch side has been examined and so time to check out gear box, at 235 kms, What should i be examining as mechanical background minimal, will a gear selector - in terms of lining up gears if worn cause gear selection probs?
struggles to select 1st and 2nd have to commonly go 3rd 2nd 1st or even reverse a little to get a gear.
Any constuctive thoughts?

Mine has the same problem...
I have to wait about 3 or 4 secs after pressing the clutch before it will go in first. Its as though the cluch is not fully depressed, but goes in fine after a few secs.
Is changing the oil the answer then?

The hardest thing about owning a jeep is telling your parents you're g a y!!
changing the oil was definitely the answer for me..... but beware..... i tried going cheap and with castrol and didn't make a difference.... i used the one they recomended on their website.....
then on a mates direction shelled out for redline mt90 and the change has been excellent..... where it used to hesitate going into 1st it now slides in no worries ..... so for me yes changing the oil for something decent did fix it..... i've also noticed the other gears change much smoother as well.....

What do you mean by "every thing on the clutch side has been examined"?
As Bazzle said if the clutch plate is binding on the input shaft you will have probs with slecting 1 & 2. I have even seen clucth plates which have become glazed which stick to the flywheel once the pressure plate is released. They look ok but give problems.
I run VMX80 in mine & have no probs selecting. Normal 80W hypoid gear oil will cause shift problems. Same as the transfer, Mine takes Dextron 3.
I would try these things first as these trannys rarely break.

If the syncro in 1st is worn, wouldn't it 'grind' before selection.
This physically won't go into 1st, until you go into 3rd, etc. But's it's only now and again.
I suggested could it be a selector line up prob, maybe compounded by a body lift?
Any ideas?

That right it would crunch if the synchro was worn. How occaisionally? You have to remember the gears are quite large as it is a truck gearbox so they select a bit slower than a car gearbox.
If you try too fast then the synchros wont keep up.

Ive just found out the price of that MT90 oil.... $110 for 3.78 litres http://www.redlineoil.com.au/product-ordering.asp
the patrol needs 3.9 litres so to do it properly is gonna cost $140
anyone know of anywhere cheaper to get it? or are other synthetic based oils any good?

The oil i had was the Lubrimaxx transgear synthetic 75-90 at near $60 for 5 litres is alot better price wise.
this is what is was concerned about......getting the clutch looked at AGAIN today so will see what eventuates......and ill keep posted

I think that it sounds like a clutch problem as well — not with slippage but with the input shaft not being 100% disconnected from the engine. My Patrol does exactly what Bingham described and after much farting around with the gear selector, oil etc. I have concluded that it is clutch related. Try placing the T/Case in neutral and then see if it slips into gear.
Apparently there is a bush somewhere in the clutch that once worn can cause the engine to still turn the gearbox even when you are out of gear. Most won’t replace this 'bush' when replacing a clutch so the problem can continue if it isn’t fixed properly.

yep my wording wasnt the best and as not overly mechanical i was informed that all had been examined but it was simply masters and slaves and infact it seemed to be ok after these were sorted but i dont know weather they hadnt bled also properly another guy looked at and the uper bleeder point had air and so either wasnt examine right on is getting air from somewhere, also it seemed to be blowing back pressure through master which apparantly never happens.......

yep went back to clutch cylinder gurus and they put a new body on clutch master and rebled and test drove and test drove and test drove and fixed the problem for now anyway......they said they were not sure what the prob is.
infact i think theyre sure im makeing it up

double clutching is your friend - clutch to nuetral - clutch out - slight blip of throttle - as rev's slow down clutch in and into gear.
from what you've described you've got exactly the same problem as mine which doesnt always want to go into 1st, 2nd or Reverse. i currently dont have the funds / faciltys to sort the issue properly, but double clutching seems to help 99.5% of the time if it doesnt wanna slide into gear. (I know its not an ideal fix but its good for the short term while i'm semi homeless)
but my problem seems to be more gearbox wear and tear mostly as it was a boat towing rig and had a trailer brake setup and shot rear shox
