Turbo Cruiser not performing

Post by Simo63 »

I purchased and repaired a damaged 1996 turbo diesel multivalve 80 series cruiser however have discovered that it has absolutely no power until it comes on boost. The motor checks out fine and has only 119,000kms on it however it is just completely absent of any of the legendary torque it should have. It will eventually climb in revs and then accelerate quite rapidly when on boost however off boost it's got less power than a 50cc Honda stepthru.

I've had 3 previous 80 series factory turbos however they have all been the earlier 1991 or 1992 models and not multivalves ... and they have all had sh%#loads of grunt. I'm at a loss. I've checked all those things you can check in your home garage so I thought it may be worth asking if anyone here has any knowledge or ideas about the problem?

Are the multivalves known to be gutless?

Cheers

What is the exhaust looking like when not on boost?

Smokey or clean?

Perhaps it is underfueling until it comes onto boost for some reason. Are the multivalves fully electronic diesels? Is so, what setup is there for boost compensation for fuel levels? Is it controlled electronically via the computer or just a diaphragm in the pump?

Gee Carts dunno what the fuel is like on boost .... as I'm driving the thing and can't see behind me ... well I guess that means there is no smoke out the back as I can't see any in the rear view mirror (unlike my trusty 12HT 60 series) ... I didn't think I could free rev it up to get on boost ... or can I? Will try and report back next week.

I think you are right ... they are electronically controlled .... what does that mean in terms of performance though? Does that mean it could be a sensor problem or something? Is it worth taking it to Toyota for a health check? Or maybe a run on a dyno?

If you are not too concerned about dollars, you could take it to Toyota and they can hook it up to their computer and run a diagnostic. Once again, I'm not to sure how "intelligent" the computers are on the multivalves.

Electronic or not, it should have plenty more grunt than what you describe.
Good luck.

Do you know what the fuel consumption is like. And at about how many revs does the turbo kick in.

I hope it wasn't rollover damage diesel's will still run with bent conrods. This could explain the lack of power before it get's the extra air to fill the cylinders properly.

no electronics on 80 series diesels, fully mechanical injection.

the most probable explanation is indeed that it is underfuelling until it comes on boost, and the adjustment is adequately explained here:

http://www.safari4x4.com.au/80scool/tec ... djust.html

properly adjusted, it should have plenty of torque right off idle.

yes that page has been very valuable to me more than once!

it should be mentioned that this tune-up works for almost any non-electronic turbo diesel toyota.

if you want serious power from a 1HD-(F)T, consider a free flowing exhaust, intercooling, and fitting an exhaust temperatre gauge to allow very fine tuning of fuel delivery, and if you really want to spend some $$, ditching the anaemic CT26 turbo and fitting a garrett, IHI or just about any other turbo (obviosuly matched as well as possible to the engine) - well over 200kW is achievable.

G'Day, hopefully you knowledgeable bunch can tell me if the above tweaks would be similar and as easy to carry out on a HJ61 with the 12H-T Engine.

Thanx...

12H-T has an inline fuel pump and tuning is different - someone on here should be able to tell you what tweaks are necessary, better to start a new thread so people will notice.
