GQ TROL wrote:Don't do it Cris!! The just don't produce enough torque in a useful rev range to get adequate performance. Got plenty of power, but its still not much chop in a 2 ton Patrol!
We've got turbo diesel Patrols and Landcruisers here running rings around Lexus powered Hilux's!!
If this is the case, why do tyhe run them in the lexus version of the 100 series landcruiser? surely they are heavier than a chopped up GQ.

Come on fellows we are all allowed our different opinions. I know GQ TROL has a 5.7 Litre fuel injected V8 so compared to that the little toyo has know chance and I can see why the little Toyo would not have the bottom end torque to crawl compared to the Diesels. But with an auto behind it it should not matter.

You are full of shite, GQ TROL.....
How come Bubs has been very successful with these swaps
Pull your head in Mad Cruiser!! All I was suggesting to Cris is that from what I've seen, they don't have the torque required for competative winch challenge events. I'm not doubting Bubs' success with the conversions, and all credit to him for doing it, but I think there are other alternatives that may be more appropriate for HIS application.
We've stacked 1850kg Lexus powered Hilux's up against 2.5 ton turbo diesel Patrols and Landcruisers on a few occasions now....not once has the Lexus held an edge to us. Just my experiences, take it as you will.
Sorry Cris, our truck is a turbo diesel TD42, no V8 in the immediate future for us unfortunately.
Cheers

I know GQ TROL mentions here that he does not have a 5.7l (Gen III) V8 so i'm not starting an argument there.
I have looked into this myself and found a few things. Listed better to worse "from what i have heard"...
PRICE - TORQUE - REV RANGE
1UZ 304 efi 1UZ
304 efi 5.7 efi not sure which is better out of the 304 & 5.7
5.7 efi 1UZ 'as above'
I'm sure you realise that you also need your transfer adaptor to go from the t700, if not already in your possesion.
Early Gen 3 engines from commodores had oil problems.
For the price of a 1UZ you could rebuild it and still be cheaper than a Gen 3, possibly even supercharge it for more TORQUE...
Personally I would stick with a manual box behind a 1UZ as it is a smaller capacity V8, and Dellows now make them (or still making) for cruisers, so if not done yet, wont be long for other makes.
If wanting to go Auto, you need a Surf Auto with some modifications.
Sorry about the typing, I have a broken hand...
Hope this helps...

I`m going to guess the turboed cruisers and nissan are worked over turbo setups and worked over fuel pumps etc etc and the 1uz`s in the luxes are stock. Now if this is the case then lets go and spend the same amount of $$$$ on a 1uz and rerace.
1uzfe`s can take a eaton M90 as well as the next bolwer up in range (can`t remember the model, think its M112) with NO mods needed on the motor other then what is needed to bolt the blower on, can stretch head bolts with the bigger blower if to much boost is run. Doing this will add anywhere from 100hp up to around 200.
Spend the 4 or 5 grand most winch challenge blokes have spent just on their turbo setup on a 1uz by bolting a blower or turbo on it and it`ll kick the desiels arse.

the problem with the 1UZ-FE is the stock ECU
replace this with an aftermarket programable type and it helps out a lot

Here we go again, lets compair apples to apples, I don`t dissagree with you that chevs are a great motor. But you can not compair a stock motor of any brand to a worked motor of any brand. Lets run a stock 1uz and a stock chev of the same year side by side and see which one lasts longer, now that would be a fair and interesting result.J Top wrote:And Guts the under-stressed factory Chev will still be trucking on after your second set of head bolts and your third melted piston.

gen 3 has a 6 bolt .
one thing that everyone seem's to miss is that the motor is not necessarly the most expensive part. to do any motor to challange specs costs dollars. if you don't spend how can you compete with those who do.
yet a gen 3 is competetive and reliable in near stock form compared to big dollars for turbo's or intercoolers or motec stuff. and more reliable than a clapped out gq deisel being force fed 20psi.
a gen 3 conversion is only 2 grand roughly dearer than a 1 uz as the motor costs say 3k more but less adaptors hence above.
i got my 6mth warrenty 20 000klm 2002 vx ss for $5500 complete. that included cats to air filter etc etc. to get 300kw i got it mafless tuned $1100. i made the engine mounts myself. marks kit $1200. bolt on no fuggin around with custom adaption stuff and further less reliable multiple adaptors.
but then are the parts common to any reliable outback challange worthy conversion and this is what costs. fuel pump, regulator, headers, exhaust, snorkel, airbox, rear drop sump ($285), radiator, hoses, coolant, pwr steer lines, ac lines, wiring, thermo's, approval costs, increased rego costs, insurance costs, oil filters etc, all say 3k worth. (you can skimp here if you don't mind the odd preventable dnf) so its under 10k all up less the 1100 from my old donk.
1uz 2k
stuff as amove 3k
aftermarket computer programmed 2k
adaptors, etc 2k
thats 9k for under 200kw of high rev only torque.
don't get me wrong though the 1uz is fine for what most use it for, and i bet bubs lux will go hard, but his has been done cheaply as he has contacts and knowledge.
finally what about an old style chev on gas. i bought a brand new crate motor last week for the ski boat. $3600 for 290hp unleaded with hei. run a gas kit and it will be as cheap and reliable as they come. and being a late 04 model and gas, the dot would be happy too. would have to be lighter than your 330kg tb42 too!
cheers bru.

Turbo diesel setup.....Second hand CT26 turbos with new internals, using home made exhaust manifolds. Upgraded fuel pumps using 12mm plungers to deliver twice the amount of fuel. Both the Patrols (2) and Cruisers (2) producing over 200HP at the wheels.....but the important thing is they're producing over 1200ft/lb of torque too from down low (Cruiser is lower down than Patrol tho??). All up cost of mods less than $2k.
1UZ uses a modified cam, and aftermarket ECU. Not sure exactly which one, works on piggy back system I believe?? Hilux's (2) also delivers over 200HP at the wheels, but torque is around 580ft/lb. Unsure of the ECU and cam costs, but engine was $1500 (send hand) and original loom and computer was an extra $1000.
I accept that torque and HP figures are often mis-represented...but all these trucks used the same dyno machine all on the same day so the figures are atleast relative to each other. I'm not saying that all 1UZ are going to turn out like this, but this is simply what I have experienced from driving both setups.
Turboed 1UZ??......yep they're great. Mate has one in his Fraser Clubman! Very horny!!!!
Cheers

you can get a half cut for $2000, I payed $1700 for mine.
My 1UZ has cost,
1900 with freight from Bris
1200 for adaptor and clutch
600 sump could make it if you had the know how
200 tail shaft mods
800? exhaust
$4700 so far
? engineers?
Sold turbo for $1500
Sold 2.8 for $2100
$3600
So for $1100 I have over 100kw more then I had at the wheels
Do those some with the price you can get for a nissan or cruiser turbo desiel motor and you will be way in front, then spend the left over and the extra 2g on the 1uz plus you get that V8 note
I used to be a desiel fan but now I`m just so much over the desiel thng its not funny.

Haven`t finished it yet, as I`m doing other crap as well like repainting it, this is where I`m spending some bloody $$$$$$$
But I know of a 4 runner in Queensland and his only gets hotter (thats hotter not over heating) when doing soft sand at low speeds on a hot day, he only has a stock v6 runner radiator which in pics looks the same as my 2.8 radiator other then the inlet and out lets being in different spots.

My 1UZ costs, so far:
$1800 half cut
$1600 custom billet aluminium manual gearbox adaptor
$400 flywheel adapter
$360 heavy duty exceedy clutch
$1500 exhaust
$860 new 3-core radiator (old one stuffed)
$240 new twin electric fans
$150 rear sump
as you can see I have paid top dollar but I am not in the industry or doing any work myself, some big savings could be made if you are "in the know". The manual adaptor is now available from Rod Shop (was not when I started) - much cheaper.
Hopefiully finished next week.......

VH45???
Why not use the Nissan infinity motor. Seen very succesful one done by Aus4wd in Melb. Variable valve timing MMMMMMM. Went hard 1000rpm-7000rpm
If the Nissan VH45 was more popular in Australia I would have seriously considered it.
As I will be touring I want to be able to get parts, and their are a lot of Toyota dealers around.
Although Nissan sold the Q45 (very, very few) I doubt the parts are as readily available.
If Nissan want to keep up with the new 130 Landcruiser (twin-turbo V8 diesel and 5.7l V8 petrol) then they are going to need to put a V8 in a Patrol. Even if this happens the motor will be mega $$$$ for a few years. Maybe when my Toyota V8 has clapped out

Hey GQ TROL I want some of that 1200ft/lb of torque have they got any spare as I imagine you would only really need about 300-500ft/lb to get them moving. I could really use a couple 100 extra ft/lb for my 18R.
Or maybe Victor Bray might be interested in swapping his powerplant in his burnout car for one of these combo's
These figures are a little blurred coming from a engine reconditioning background I beleive they may have a little problem with rubber engine mounts

Are you definately wanting to go auto? Manual would be more fun...
I will be going manual for mine...
Less hassles, purpose built gearbox...
If you already have T700 to Transfer Case adaptor then it will save on adaptors, but most likely need to modify drive line length. Staying Manual you wont...
