wish i could find a late 90's 40 series ... maybe a mid 80's might be more reasonable.
more mods/ knowlege on th 40's, more utility than comfort. but like mechano to put together, the datto's seem to be a little more water proof in the petrols than the 40's.
mk/mq i don't know if lockers are available for these, i thought i read somewhere that they weren't.
40's can go topless. look better. i'll buck the trend here, and say a 40 series 4 speed is plenty fine, a good one shifts well, and is fairly bulletproof (seen heaps abused behind v8's), doesn't have the problem of 5th gear wearing out (fairly common on toy 5 speeds). i do heaps of highway miles in my 4 speed 40.
mq's initially are cheaper.
Spit my last breath
what i meant was that the mq/mks look like the gqs with only slight differance not that you get a 40 up in the 90s cruisers have changed shapes over the same time which makes the40s look old and out dated plus you can get lockers a mq/mk look at all the trucks in the nissan section that run thembad_religion_au wrote:muduppig wrote:mq/mk look like a more current model truck than the 40 with basically the same shape going right though to late 90s

PUT YOUR HANDS UP IF YOU WANT TO GO FASTER
RTD Racing
OFFROAD CARTEL
RTD Racing
OFFROAD CARTEL
if you want a rattly heap of shit get a 40.
Try both cars and you will find a good mk or mq will shit all over a forty in everyway.
You can get lockers for mq's and mk's.
You can also go topless in a swb by taking of the canopy(piece of cake).
Interior of an mq is shitloads better than a forty aswell.

Gq patrol
God of Magnificant Ideas!
Both the 40 & the MQ are good "first 4x4s" and each has their advantages and disadvantages over each other as the guys above listed.
With the dramatic drop in GQ prices of late perhaps you should add it to your list of potential first rig choices, they are availiable very cheaply if you are prepared to search around for a while.
The 40 and the MQ will also have some "years" on them and unless your good doing mechanicle stuff then there may be a few unforseen expenses that you will occour with either choice.......
Motors may have limited life left and a replacement may be needed shortly after purchase, its an expence we must "expect" when buying a 20 year old vehicle, can you rebuild the motor yourself or will you have to pay out to a mechanic ?
Rust will no doubt be an issue, again its an expensive operation to get rid of the ole cancer....... unless you DIY !
Much of the drivelines will also show wear..... lets face it these rigs should have up around 250,000K's on em if not far more...... noisey diffs, howling gearboxes & transfers arent cheap to re bearing..... even more so if you paying some one else to do it !
Personally I'd choses the MQ, and I'm trying not to be biased here either but the MQ has a more modern style over the 40, has more comfort, and is generally a better vehicel allround over the 40....... mind you their isnt that much of a "gap" between them.
Canopy removal is a huge plus especially for those that live in the warmer climates, ( also cool for crawlin the mall n pickin up chicks especially when there's a V8 rumbling under the bonnet and its a SOAed rig on 35"s )
Conclusion.....
if you are good mechanically or are willing to learn then either the MQ or 40 would be a good first choice ...... if your hopeless at basic mechanicle stuff save up a bit longer and get aGQ
Kingy
p/s
Head to the nissan section and chechout the "BIBLEs"...... heaps of info on MQs through to GQ's etc.... also many of the members rigs are listed in the bibles and there is a wealth of knowledge at your finger tips
Also............ read my signature !!! ( yeah its biased but its true !! )

I was thinking of a GQ or an old 80 aswell
but i thought if i was learning to 4wd in an older car i wouldnt get so pissed off if/when i damage it. I like the 40's but as you guys have said the MQ's look more modern.
I wouldnt be able to rebuild a motor and stuff. But I have mates that are becoming mechances but i might aswell just save up
Bighazza
I too don't know much about the mech's of a rig etc, but am havin fun learning about it trying to fix any probs that I have with mine.
Got a lwb MK and about to collect my SOA from Sydney soon, as Kingy said there is heaps of info out there and the Guys that have done it are also gr8 for addy as well.

That looks like a photoshop of a defender 130 with the toyota cab stuck on the front. Just from looking at the tray and the fact it has a huge rear window seal. Still can't explain the horse cart springs but .
Hey kingy I've got an email email floating around from a mine site from a guy responsible for serviceing the vehicles and its got that line in there with the same line that you've got, only the brands are switched. I am trying to find it and will post it when I do as its a funny read.
ok. i've had both, the 40 series was good but as has been stated a bit
rugged and rattly and suffered the usual roof rust but would go anywhere.
the mk patrol was a leap ahead in comfort but still a choppy ride as it was
a swb but still suffer from rust if not careful. mine was a 5spd which made day to day driving more
comfortable and if these were you're only two choices i'd go the patrol.
as has been stated
ride but once you've had coil suspension you'll never go back.
as for mods the sky is the limit or is that your wallet? in stock form a gq
will beat the others hands down{my opinion only} so initially less mods
needed plus you get airconditioning .
good luck.

My first was a jackaroo and it was shit was always in need of repair but then seen the light I got a
GQ 4.2L lwb very few probs $7,500 or was it $8,500
Slowly doing it up
Believe me when something brakes you learn fast how to fix it, its all the funs of having a 4by
1995 land rover disco on 265 muddies
I only owned an MQ, but when I was after mine I did a little looking on both sides of the fence.
40 I believe to be a much stronger truck with more mods avaliable, but the MQ/K is designed closer to a car so if it was to be your daily driver you would enjoy it much more.
However the important fact is that your tossing up between two very proven trucks, find a good example of either and you'll learn a lot about off roading.

What about the 80series
Bighazza wrote:Now why didnt we get this
theres one thing about this photo that a stock MQ never saw....
...GROUND CLEARANCE!
i cant believe how low the stock MQs are.
i may be very biased but that comes from my experiences.
i got my FJ on the road for next to nothing, and with a 2 inch bodylift it fit 35s. my mate bought his shorty MQ for more than i got my whole rig, registration, 35s etc. he ran 32s coz they are so low and even they wanted to rub the guards on occasion.
my LWB had a better ramp over angle than his SWB.
we had a drag race. i was pushing 35s he was pushing 32s i kicked his arse.
theres nothing wrong with the old 4spd. just put 35s on to drop the revs at 100km/h. the 2F has plenty of torque to turn them.
full floating rear end.
4.2L petrol VS. 2.8L petrol
40s driveline parts are interchangable with other models.
whereas MQs doors/front guards are about the only interchangeable things with any of nissans other models.
pretty easy to drop a 60 series 5spd into a 40. have fun finding a MQ 5 spd. and when they break have fun finding anyone who wants to part a 5 spd out.
id always get a 40 over a MQ. 40s only look older, because they are. they were around before the G60.
just something to think about.
