Looking at putting a set of the new Cooper ATR's in 305/70/16 on my GU.
What's the word on the street about them? Haven't seen any around.
Got plain Cooper AT's at the moment and not getting ST/STT's.

Cooper ATR's?

My folks recent did the Bourke Police Trip all over the centre and up north, they destroyed two AT's completely. One peeled the tread off and the other just came apart, prolly copped a stake, dad always takes two spares luckily. The old man went for ST's when he got home cause he didn't think the all terrrains were tuff enuff, Coopers gave him warranty on the two farked AT's and a great deal to swap over to ST's. He's now a happy camper. ST's bit noisier but handle and wear okay so far. Comes down to what you plan to do with your vehicle, if you're only driving on road then AT's are fine, but if you're going to do some touring (liht offroad work) then go for the ST's.

Did the last Bourke Outback Treck as well running ST-C's. Did 9,500KM in 2.5 weeks. Staked one tyre between Hungerford and Quilpie. Plugged it and then had it patched in Mt Isa.

The decision comes down to application. The new ATR is a great All Terrain Tyre with a design for more bitumen service. If you are travelling or spend more time on the bitumen with occassional offroad useage, the ATR is a very capable tyre. It is a quiet, comfortable riding tyre that gets longer miles than its predecessor the AT.
If you are doing more regular offroad or gravel, stony road driving, then you are probably better off opting for the ST. It is a luggier tyre that will handle the harsher conditions better, and provide better traction off the black top.
